		Tuxworth was dumped from the CLP leadership in 1986 and responded by enlisting with the Joh for PM push, forming a local branch of the National Party and holding his seat as its candidate at the 1987 election by a margin of 19 votes.
		Tuxworth prevailed again but Labor-voting aboriginal communities were then added to the seat in a redistribution that some considered highly suspect.
		Goyder was won for the CLP upon its creation in 1990 by Terry McCarthy, member for Victoria River from 1983, who defeated Ian Tuxworth, the former Chief Minister who won Barkly as a Joh-boosting National Party candidate in 1987 after the CLP dumped him as leader.

		Deeply embittered, Mr Tuxworth and his supporters founded the NT Nationals and ran a virulent campaign against the CLP in 1987, with the aid of controversial Queensland premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen who barnstormed through the NT on their behalf.
		Similarly, Ian Tuxworth's incumbency in Barkly was neutralised by the inclusion of pro-Labor Aboriginal communities, so he chose to run in the Top End rural seat of Goyder but was defeated by the CLP's Terry McCarthy.

		A debate now ensued in the Northern Territory parliament about whether the findings of the trial and appeals be quashed or not.
		Ian Tuxworth, who had resigned as Chief Minister one month before the findings of the inquiry were released, stated to the Assembly that he believed that the Chamberlains should have the findings of all of the trials quashed and be able to completely clear their names.
		Interestingly, Marshall Perron, the former Attorney General, resigned his office one month prior to the report being filed as well.

		Since 1979 the Commonwealth has an agreement with the Northern Territory government that the Commonwealth approve the issue of the mining of uranium, and the Territory government will oversee the day to day operation of the mine.
		That agreement was enshrined in legislation by the then Minister for Mines, Mr Ian Tuxworth, who, on 3 January 1979, introduced a short bill in parliament that became known as Section 7A of the /Mining Act/.
		Let me tell you what Mr Tuxworth on that particular date: This short bill is of prime importance to the people of the Northern Territory in clarifying the relative responsibilities of the Commonwealth and the Northern Territory government in relation to the mining of prescribed substances in the Northern Territory.

		Some years ago I acted for then NT Labor Opposition Leader Bob Collins in obtaining a Supreme Court injunction against the entire NT Cabinet after a Minister had been forced to reveal in the media that the Government had agreed to fund defamation litigation by former Chief Minister Ian Tuxworth against Bob Collins.
		Apparently the agreement to fund Tuxworth's litigation had been made as part of a secret deal to get him to agree to resign quietly as Chief Minister in favour of another CLP nominee thought to have better electoral prospects.
		My morning in court as junior counsel was a personally memorable one.
