  Memorial Resolution: Ian Watt: 3/2/00
Watt was wounded and captured when Singapore fell to Japan, and between 1942 and 1945, he lived as a prisoner of war in the labor camps on the River Kwai.
Watt integrated New Criticism's close readings with a concern for such historical factors as economic change, class and gender determinants, the dynamics of a reading public, cultural and philosophical influences, social psychology, and theories of narrative that had been missing or slighted in earlier criticism.
Watt once said, insisting that he was being hard-headed, not sentimental, that he was sure that, in his World-War II internment, it was the fact that works of literature existed and could still touch him--and his awareness of what that fact said about humanity--that enabled him to survive.

Title   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Watt’s long term relevance and popularity is founded at least partly on his clarification of two key assumptions within literary criticism; firstly, that the novel correlated to the development of the modern age, and secondly, that the primary agent in instigating that change was the middle class.
Watt himself was quick to point out that contemporary usage of the word ‘novel’, and the concepts surrounding it, are relatively new inventions, “not fully established until the end of the eighteenth century” (p.10).
Ian Watt’s status as a literary critic remains as potent as ever, but the long term ramifications of scholarship on Behn signify a need to be continually aware of the means with which we analyse our history.

 Ian Watt (1917-1999)
Due to the influence of Ian Watt's seminal study in literary sociology, The Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding (1957), Watt's candidate, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), gained wide acceptance.
Ian Watt's The Rise of the Novel (1957) still dominates attempts at writing a history of the novel.
Richardson's contemporary readers were treated to what they identified as a new level of lietrary "realism" in Pamela; Ian Watt argues that this novel inaugurated the psychological novel genre, because it focused on the psyche of one character, though many argue that this distinction should be awarded to William Godwin’s Caleb Williams (1795).

Recognizing that life does not present itself in neat separate packages of literature, history, and sociology, "The Rise of the Novel" integrates Watt's considerable knowledge in each of these areas to assess the impact of three authors, Defoe, Richardson and Fielding, upon the development of the English novel in the eighteenth century.
He joined the British Army at the age of 22 and served with distinction in World War II as an army lieutenant in the infantry from 1939 to 1946.
Watt makes a case for why Defoe, Richardson, and Fielding all have a claim to the paternity of the novel.
