IARNROD Eireann chiefs have admitted the company made mistakes that led to a £24 million budget over run on a major cabling project that has yet to be completed.
Iarnrod Chairman, Michael McDonnell, said that he was holding up his hands and admitting that mistakes were made, particularly in relation to specification and management of the project.
Two other staff members who handled this project for Iarnrod Eireann have also since moved on to work for the company that won the contract.

Iarnrod Eireann has denied union allegations that it plans to withdraw completely from rail freight services.
Iarnrod Eireann's freight services were already predicted to return a deficit of _14 million for this year - but the closure of IFI will mean a further loss of revenue of up to _4 million.
However, Iarnrod Eireann spokesperson Barry Kenny said there was no question of withdrawing from profitable freight services.

Even as the CIE board this Wednesday was preparing to debate Iarnród Eireann's recommendation to axe the Limerick/Ballybrophy line on the grounds of non viability, the 7.05 train left Limerick empty on the same line - and nobody saw it leave from Platform Four - way out from the main platforms.
The chairman of the Regional Authority, Mattie Ryan also called for the retention of the line and Deputy Máire Hoctor, said she had spoken to the Minister and still hoped that the Shannon Rail Link would eventually link up with the Ballybrophy line.

Unions at Iarnrod Eireann have alleged that the company has decided to pull out of the rail freight business and that the decision is to go before the board of CIE for approval on 6 November.
Spokesperson Barry Kenny said that Iarnrod Eireann's rail freight business had been forecast to return a deficit of €14 million this year.
