  Historical Context
Iaroslav the Wise was considered an effective and strong leader, who had in 1036 just outlived the last of his brothers to become the sole Prince.
The latter two were made saints after a younger brother, Iaroslav, who had ruled in Novgorod, defeated and killed Sviatopolk in 1019, permanently sticking him with the epithet "The Damned".
Iaroslav divided his realm with another brother, Mstislav, who ruled the area around Tmutorokan as a quasi-independent principality.

Iaroslav's reign is usually considered the pinnacle of Kievan civilization, and history has granted to Iaroslav the epithet "the Wise." One of Iaroslav's achievements was to codify the customary law of the Kievan Rus.
Iaroslav's code also permits certain relatives to avenge murders, but he sought to discourage this old custom by strictly delineating which relatives had the right of vengeance.
The Pravda of Iaroslav's sons adds a graded wergeld system, mostly in relation to royal officials (who have a wergeld of eighty grivna) and persons of servile status (from twelve grivna for an overseer down to five grivna for a peasant or herdsman -- the fine for killing a horse is 2-3 grivna, incidentally).

Since we had decided to set the event during the reign of Iaroslav "the Wise", the issue was to find such a dispute during that period.
The crucial point in history would be Iaroslav's naming of "his son Vladimir" as Prince of Novgorod, and the approval of this by the veche, Novgorod's "city council".
In the end, Iaroslav's legitimate son proved a far better diplomat than his half-brother; although they each had about the same number of fighters won to their side, the legitimate Vladimir managed to get most of the more experienced fighters.
