Topic: Iberia (book)

  Strabo's Geography
And Northern Iberia, in addition to its ruggedness, not only is extremely cold, but lies next to the ocean, and thus has acquired its characteristic of inhospitality and aversion to intercourse with other countries; consequently, it is an exceedingly wretched place to live in.
Iberia is like an ox-hide extending in length from west to east, its fore-parts toward the east, and in breadth from north to south.
The coastline adjacent to the Sacred Cape, on the west, is the beginning of the western side of Iberia as far as the mouth of the Tagus River, and, on the south, the beginning of the southern side as far as another river, the Anas, and its mouth.

Events of the Barry Brook Center of Music Research
The Iberia Albéniz composed for piano between 1905 and 1908 is anything but slick.
Rather, its four books of three pieces each comprise a collection of nouvelles impressions chiefly inspired by the southern province of Andalusia.
Even though Iberia can be a bit too much for the listener (and certainly for the performer), even though the pieces were conceived independently, I think it is important to listen to the whole thing live at least once in order to understand the magnitude and beauty of Albéniz’s achievement.

Iberia, a non-fictional piece of travel writing, had long sat upon my shelf awaiting the day that some stimulus would prompt me towards an in-depth view of Spain.
Iberia was written in the mid-60's and is, in truth, an amalgamation of Michener's myriad trips to the region beginning in 1936.
The only way this book is interesting is as a period piece- not about spain, but about american paternalistic, patronizing, and generally obnoxious attitudes when it was written.

Making Difference in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia.(Book review) - The Historian | Encyclopedia.com
One is not venturing into the familiar world of historical references (e.g., law codes, institutional documents, personal diaries or letters, etc.) but of literary erudition coupled with the significance of multifaceted subjects and their contrasting nuances.
Both scholars promoted the concept that medieval Iberia experienced a remarkable age of illumination during which three distinct religious and ethnic groups--Muslims, Jews, and Christians--coexisted in relative harmony.
She contends that medieval Iberia and its sense of commingling and the intermeshing of the three cultures provided the enlightened milieu that produced such divergent discourses, while the homogeneity of the early modern era and its demands of religious uniformity and social hierarchism diluted and transformed the extraordinary medieval sense of alterity.

And it is peculiar to Iberia, according to Poseidonius, that the crows are fl there and also that the slightly dappled horses of Celtiberia change their colour when they brought over to Farther Iberia.
But though the Romans called the country as a whole both "Iberia" and "Hispania" synonymously, they spoke of one division of it as "Farther" and of the other as "Hither"; at different times, however, they divide the country in different ways, suiting their government of the country to the requirements of the times.

I've reviewed in the last week those "spanish" recordings of Iberia I think are the best: Larrocha and Sýnchez; the very "classical" version the first one and a very racial performing the second.
As a masterwork, Iberia accepts many possible performances and possibilities, of course because of his complexity and the very rich possibilities of his technical writing and the multiple melodies, some of them based on spanish popular tunes.
It is so rare to find nowadays Daniel Barenboim sitting behind the keyboard in a recording studio - and even though as a conductor he has demonstrated his stronghold on the german repertoire, those of you who treasure his piano performances will find yourself more than satisfied with this new recording of Spanish repertoire.

Don Quixote was recently voted best book of all time in a survey of 100 novelists.
This may be connected to the fact that a single book's greatness silenced the Spanish novel for 250 years.
Yet its conviction signals a leap out of the absorption with style and into something else, maybe a return to storytelling: "The idea which prevailed was that a book was a style, a writer was a style, only a style.
