Ibiblio is one of the oldest WWW Internet websites and a large conservancy of freely available information, including software, music, literature, art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies.
Unless otherwise specified, all material on ibiblio is assumed to be in the public domain.
In September 2000, MetaLab began to collaborate with the Center for the Public Domain; the name was changed to ibiblio to reflect the goal of being "the public's library and digital archive".

We worked with an employee of ibiblio, who was given this assignment as part of his position.
Along the way ibiblio expanded its mission and support, and began hosting collections created by individuals who did not have the means to host the information themselves.
We also found from a more thorough content analysis that ibiblio was not as unorganized as we had originally thought.

ibiblio launches torrents, but loses sight of the goal | connect.educause.edu   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
ibiblio, the famous Internet library and archive, recently launched a project to distribute content via bittorrent, a protocol which is very efficient at distributing large files over the Internet.
Unfortunately, ibiblio missed an opportunity to set themselves apart from the many who use bittorrent to distribute content of dubious legality, by completely failing to include any kind of licensing information.
Don't get me wrong, there is no doubt in my mind that ibiblio have a licence to distribute this content, it is just a shame to see them not taking this sterling opportunity to take the high moral and legal ground on this.

Ibiblio's staff and contributors rescue documents, videos, audio and image files from dusty archives or attics where few could view them and put them on the Web, where anyone with an Internet connection can retrieve the information.
Ibiblio began its life in 1992 under the moniker SunSITE, with funding from Sun Microsystems and a mandate "to share software and other things of interest," according to an October 1992 press release.

While ibiblio as ibiblio is only two years old (the name dates to September 2000), the origins of the current site trace back to 1992.
Ibiblio's resume includes such Internet milestones as Project Gutenberg, the first online Presidential White House Archives (Clinton), Free Burma (probably the first human rights website, though such claims are difficult to prove in a time before search engines), and the first experimental web home of the National Gallery of Art.
I imagine ibiblio must be how Internet pioneers first imagined using the new technology – as a tool for the free exchange of knowledge, before dotcoms, before pop-up ads, and definitely before JenniCams.
