Once the roots are long enough, cut off all unsightly or unnecessary foliage and wash as much soil as possible away from the root ball of the plant - taking care not to damage the roots.

This Trident Maple root over rock style was purchased in March 2004 whilst the members of the Artistic Bonsai Circle group were on a visit to a Bonsai nursery in South East England.The tree had been imported into the nursery from Japan.
The tree had good trunk taper and root structure gripping the rock well, and it was also a nice piece of Japanese Ibigawa rock as well.
The tree had no fine secondary branches, most of the growth had been pruned back to the main branches, so these would have to be grown on over a period of time.

NAGOYA (Kyodo) The Nagoya High Court on Thursday rejected an appeal from people seeking to scrap Japan's largest dam, which is nearly completed after being on the drawing board for 49 years.
The high court supported a December 2003 district court ruling that rejected two lawsuits from area residents to stop construction of the Tokuyama Dam in Ibigawa, Gifu Prefecture.
In the two suits, filed in March 1999 and July 2001, the plaintiffs claimed the government's estimate for water demand in the area was inflated, and building the dam based on the state's estimate is unreasonable.

The Ibigawa Town festival was in large respects similar to the Tarui festival I saw on Tuesday, having several large floats on which kabuki was performed by children, but it was still worth seeing.
Ibigawa is only a small town and it felt like every single person had come out for the day, thronging the streets and creating a great atmosphere that you don’t really get back home.
I can’t think of anything I’ve seen that’s similar to this and it really underlines the importance of community and family to Japanese people.
