 Abboud’s Rule - History - Sudan - Africa
It was overthrown on November 17 by Lieutenant General Ibrahim Abboud, the commander in chief of the armed forces.
Abboud, reputedly an advocate of closer relations with Egypt, dismissed parliament, suspended the constitution, declared martial law, and established a cabinet with himself as prime minister.
A revolt in southern Sudan that had begun under Abboud against domination by the Arab north continued as a civil war until March 1972, when the south was granted some autonomy.

A benign, incorruptible, father figure, Abboud alone could have rallied his freedom-loving, free-and-easy country men to his own austere goals of discipline and diligence.
Despite repeated promises to restore civilian government, he could not bring himself to relax tight control of the press, prohibition of political activity, heavyhanded restriction of assembly, discussion and the press.
Paradoxically, it was Abboud's first experiment with democracy that led to his downfall.
