The small town of Ibusuki is the usual gateway to Satsuma Peninsula and Mt. Kaimon-dake.
With its glut of typically terrible small-town architecture, Ibusuki doesn't really warrant more than a brief stopover to experience the hot sand "baths" on the beach in front of the Ginsho Hotel.
There is plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets in Ibusuki, although there is no campsite, only a concrete area for camper vans.

And I got the treatment of being buried in hot sand on the beach that Ibusuki is famous for.
Went to Kagoshima station and was deciding whether to stay there or go on to Kumamoto when a man, former English teacher, walked up to help.
