Ice Age | Movie Review | Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman is a film critic for EW One of the unexpected delights of the computer-animation revolution is that it hasn't been dehumanized by all the digital dazzle.
At the beginning of ''Ice Age,'' Scrat, a snaggletoothed fuzzball of neurotic energy, tries to bury his precious acorn, a task that will elude him in various ways throughout the film, rendering him a kind of pip-squeak Wile E. Coyote.
The very setting of ''Ice Age'' is a winterized version of the Road Runner's playfully abstract jungle-gym desert.

But what makes the "Ice Age" deleted scenes interesting is the fact that countless hours of meticulous computer-generated artistry went into the construction of clips -- yet they had never seen the light of day during the film's theatrical run.
"'Ice Age' had some pacing problems, and there were characters that didn't matter as much as we thought they would when we started, so we trimmed a few sequences out," Wedge explained.
Another co-star in the "Ice Age" cast was Wedge himself, who provides the sounds of the mischievous saber-toothed squirrel Scrat, who appears throughout the film.

SPLICEDwire | "Ice Age" review (2002)
It's a pity that most anyone who regularly goes to the movies has already seen the best two minutes of "Ice Age," a uniquely styled new computer-animated comedy that takes place in a era of woolly mammoths, cave men and saber-tooth tigers.
While the rest of the picture is not by any means all downhill from there, this scene is so funny that nothing after it has a prayer of measuring up.
"Ice Age" isn't destined for the kind of instant-classic reverence bestowed upon last year's batch of CGI fare for families.

All the creature wants is to bury an acorn, as squirrels tend to do for the winter (and isn’t the ice age like the ultimate winter?) But as Scrat tries to ram the nut into a glacier, he inadvertently starts the ice age by cracking the ice, causing the glacier to move forward.
This sequence, which opens ICE AGE, not only provides scale and scope to the natural wonders surrounding the characters, it sets the tone of the film.
Having Scrat trigger the ice age was only the first step — the tip of the iceberg, so to speak — in creating the film’s environments.

Though the narrative style of "Ice Age" has been around for almost as long, superb animation, a droll script, and excellent vocal talents make this a compelling and surprisingly moving addition to the computer-generated canon (where it sits alongside the likes of "Monsters, Inc. " and "Shrek").
Although "Ice Age" doesn't match "Shrek" for animation and wit, it still manages to remain consistently entertaining and delightful throughout.
