She learned professional skating for this movie in 10 months.
Come on, Hollywood...with all the recent publicity about whether women are suited for math and science, please don't insult our intelligence by assuming that scientific details are unimportant in a movie marketed to young girls.

Ice Princess - Rotten Tomatoes   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Ice Princess sticks closely to the mold of other sports flicks, but there is a tenderness and refreshing lack of compromise assembled from its spare parts.
Ice Princess, though somewhat clichéd, combines the fire of passion for a dream with the frost of unscrupulous reality.
Although this is the kind of entertainment designed to send its audience home happy, Ice Princess has its share of stinging moments and has a good deal more edge than one might have expected.

Fiction: The Ice Princess, by Jae Brim
To be the Ice Princess was to be the belle of the town and the surrounding countryside.
The entire town would stand at the water's edge while each Ice Princess spent her time on the ice, waiting to be told the longest night of the year had passed, and that they would be brought safe into the next.
It is the duty of the Ice Princess to sacrifice to the lake, to usher the world from the longest night to the next year.

DVD review of Ice Princess - DVDTOWN.com   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The "Ice" part comes in because the main character in the story is a teenage girl who goes from being merely a smart, studious high-school student to a glamorous ice-skating competitor.
In studying ice skating further, Casey develops a love for it, and eventually she has to decide between a full scholarship worth tens of thousands of dollars to one of the nation's most prestigious schools or pursuing a newfound goal of perhaps, maybe, possibly if she's lucky, becoming an Olympic ice-skating contender.
I was reminded while watching "Ice Princess" of all the students I had over the years who told me they weren't trying to get good grades in high school or even graduate because they were going to be professional basketball or football stars when they grew up.

That is the central dilemma in Ice Princess, the latest live action Disney film which seems tailored to a young female audience.
The teenagers and adults in her midst (and almost all are female) seem equally unsure of the correct path either for Casey or themselves and this gives Ice Princess more than an hour to weigh a choice where the outcome seems rather obvious from the start.
Ice Princess is presented in its original 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions.

If someone without ice skating knowledge watches the film they will assume the skaters are doing the jumps and will assume ice skating must be easy.

‘Ice Princess’ takes ludicrous leaps - AT THE MOVIES - MSNBC.com
“Ice Princess” substitutes skating talent for royal blood, but it’s essentially trying to be the same movie, lifting a sweet little nobody out of the pack and setting her on a pedestal.
Yet “Ice Princess” is not particularly well done, an odd and disappointing follow-up for British director Tim Fywell, who made a wonderful feature debut with 2003’s quirky family drama “I Capture the Castle.”
While “Princess Diaries” was built on a bolt-out-of-the-blue premise common to fairy tales, “Ice Princess” comes off as even more farfetched.

 Ice Princess - Movie Review
Disney's 'Ice Princess' might lack the fly-on-the-wall aspect of that glorious slice of TV gold, but the in-sport bitching, the tears, the figure-of-eights and the spangly costumes are all included in spades.
But Trachtenberg's bubbly, believable performance carries the project in much same way as Anne Hathaway single-handedly made The Princess Diaries a success (incidentally, both 'Ice Princess' and The Princess Diaries are based on stories by Meg "if it doesn't have 'Princess' in the title, I didn't write it" Cabot).
Parents probably have a tough time these days deciding what they should and shouldn't take their kiddies to see - not just because some movies are unsuitable for tiny eyes, but because so many of today's so-called family films are just too painfully-dull or sickly-sweet to ever want to sit through.

'Ice Princess' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
"Ice Princess," smartly directed by Tim Fywell from Hadley Davis' insightful script, is about more than striving for one's dream, for what Casey discovers is that she has to decide whether she's pursuing her dream or her mother's.
Since she has always enjoyed ice skating on the pond adjacent to her home, she hits upon a study of the aerodynamics of ice skating.
"Ice Princess" works its way to its resolution with a mix of fortuitousness and a certain rigor, and it ends on an amusingly realistic note, suggesting that though Tina and Joan may be capable of seeing the light, that doesn't mean they're going to change.

For those who don't insist that Ice Princess re-invent the tween-oriented ice skating genre, Tim Fywell's bright and inoffensive contribution to girlish daydreams slips into its erstwhile bubblegum formula just enough glimmers of quality to survive the burden of adult skepticism.
While Fywell's direction of Ice Princess may be generic, it is also pleasantly unaggressive and rarely belabors its familiar tropes, instead gliding along its predictable path free from self-consciousness.
While Ice Princess lacks the spunk of the previous decade's skatefest The Cutting Edge, it is decent and harmless and nowhere near as insufferable as it could have been.

“Ice Princess”, based on a story by Meg Cabot [“The Princess Diaries”] may very well have been produced for Television had it been made in the Reagan era too — but it’s 2005, and the money’s in cinema.
Also, this isn’t the “Bride of Boogedy” or “Tower of Terror”, this is family Disney at the top of their game, and whilst it mightn’t feel as gratifying as a Hanks blockbuster, or as much as a treat as even a Sandler comedy — it’ll truly satisfy you.

 Ice Princess Review at Hollywood.com
Similar to The Princess Diaries, Raise Your Voice and others of its ilk, Ice Princess is yet another modern-day fairy tale about a science nerd who turns into a figure skater.
Casey hits the ice running and is soon training with champion-in-the-making Gen Harwood (Hayden Panettiere) and her famously tough coach and mother, Tina (Kim Cattrall), getting a crash course in the glamour, sweat and tears of competitive skating.
Cusack and Cattrall are effective, playing two controlling mothers on the opposite end of the spectrum who actually have more in common than they think, especially in how they deal with their strong-willed daughters.

This film is so likeable, so enjoyable, so warmly entertaining that it should create a franchise similar to and as successful as another "Princess" movie - "The Princess Diaries." It is easy to imagine the story of Casey Carlyle and her pursuit of ice skating fame as being a continuing saga.
She is almost swanlike in her beauty as she glides over the ice, and thanks to great photography it is difficult to find scenes where she does not appear to be doing her own skating.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Ice Princess
Perhaps if Casey weren't already adorable and in top physical shape, or if popular girl Gen (Hayden Panettiere)—coach Tina's daughter, who's initially shown being catty to Casey—didn't so abruptly make nice-nice with her nerdy new teammate, the film's rise-to-the-top narrative would be more compelling.
Ice Princess briefly touches on the insanity that grips many parents of budding athletes (Tina is an unscrupulous Mommy Dearest to Gen) and the way in which some mothers (in a nod to its belief in female empowerment, fathers are nowhere to be found) attempt to live vicariously through their daughters.
Yet the film is really driven by a shallow "follow your heart" doctrine in which practical thoughts about the future are just silly obstacles on one's path to fame, fortune, and super-cute-awesome fun.

 Ice Princess Movie Review
“Ice Princess” is at once the movie you’re expecting, and something quite different.
The role could have been played as tough, mean and cold, but Cattrall is wise enough to allow us to see that other choices are always available to Tina, that she’s working against her better nature to be so domineering of her daughter—who really doesn’t have her heart set on skating—and so manipulative of Casey.
It’s one of the most popular spectator sports in the country now, and unless I miss my guess, “Ice Princess” is likely to do very well at the boxoffice.
