Ice Station Zebra: (Michel Legrand) In the heart of cold war tensions, author Alistair MacLean wrote many of the most popular war and espionage stories of the 1960's and 1970's, a handful of which were translated onto the big screen.
The choice of composer for Ice Station Zebra was, however, not a composer you would expect at the time.
While not at all the most successful, Ice Station Zebra was a heroic and entertaining 1968 adaptation to film.

But for boys especially "Ice Station Zebra" had all the ingredients of a thrilling adventure: Captain James Ferraday (Hudson) is instructed to take his nuclear submarine to the North Pole to pick up the survivors of weather station Zebra.
But "Ice Station Zebra" must be the oddest odd man out here.
When Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies asked viewers which movies they were desperate to see transferred to DVD, the 1968 Cold War thriller "Ice Station Zebra" made the list -- along with "King Solomon's Mines," "Ivanhoe," "The Letter" and "Random Harvest." I can see no rhyme or reason to the list.

 Ice Station Zebra
Zebra has already moved a good bit from its original position--the polar ice cap, just sitting on top of the Arctic Ocean, can't quite manage to keep up with the west-east spin of the earth, so that it has a slow westward movement in relation to the earth's crust.
The ice storm was no longer the gusting, swirling fog of that morning but a driving wall of stiletto-tipped spears, near-lethal in its ferocity, highspeed ice-spicule lances that would have skewered their way through the thickest cardboard or shattered in a second a glass held in your hand.
One would have expected moonlit ice to shine and sparkle and glitter with the light of a million crystal chandeliers: but it was dark.

TechnoFile Reviews Ice Station Zebra on DVD
Ice Station Zebra is a cold war adventure telling the tale of a US Submarine crew sent to rescue a crew of civilians trapped at the title location.
The first half of the movie recounts the sub’s journey to the arctic and under the ice, and during that time there’s a sabotage attempt that threatens to destroy the sub and all in it – a suicide mission before the days of zealots strapping explosives to themselves.
It was only the biggest and best theaters of the day that could show Cinerama films in their native format, and it was generally only the biggest and most awe inspiring films (such as 2001: a space odyssey) that could fill such screens.

Nicely put.
By the way, anyone having the old MGM letterboxed laserdisc should watch all the way to the end as the neat cue for the "under the ice" sequence, not included on the album, is used as "exit music", in stereo and in the clear.
ZEBRA, on the other hand, never strays far from the flavorful mix of characters and the actors who play them, from Rock Hudson's nearly humorless Capt. Ferraday, to Patrick McGoohan's sardonic spy, "Jones," to Ernest Borgnine's earthy Vaslov.
