Ice dam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
About 13,000 years ago, the Cordilleran ice sheet crept southward into the Idaho Panhandle, forming a large ice dam about 13,000 years ago that blocked the mouth of the Clark Fork River, creating a massive lake 2000 feet deep and containing more than 500 cubic miles of water.
The water behind the ice dam then rises and often to such a height that it breaks the levees that contain the flow of the river and creates disastrous floods.
Ice dams sometimes form on the Hwang Ho, and in rivers in Siberia and the Canadian Arctic.

 Ice Dams
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof.
The dam grows as it is fed by the melting snow above it, but it will limit itself to the portions of the roof that are on the average below 32°F. So the water above backs up behind the ice dam and remains a liquid.
Since most ice dams form at the edge of the roof, there is obviously a heat source warming the roof elsewhere.

The art of ice dam removal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
An ice dam is a wall of ice that forms at the edge of the roof, usually at the gutters or soffit.
Ice dams are usually caused by heavy snowfall and improper ventilation in the attic.
Performing ice dam removal is risking severe personal injury and damage to the roof if not done properly.

Ice Dam: a mass of ice formed at the transition from a warm to a cold roof surface, frequently formed by refreezing meltwater at the overhang of a roof, causing ice and water to back up under roofing materials.
Ice and Water Shield is a tough, pliable sheet membrane designed to help prevent moisture penetration and interior damage when ice dam buildup causes water to back up during the winter season, and helps protect against wind driven rain.
When trapped by layers of ice and snow, the water is forced up and under the shingles, over and around flashings and valleys, and behind the siding of sidewalls; leaving it to drain through the ceiling of your home.

 Ice Dam FAQ
Ice dams are formed when the gutter system becomes filled with moisture which, when frozen, forms a "dam" at the eave of the roof.
Ice dam related leaks occur when warm, heated air from the home begins to migrate through the insulation and into the attic area of the house.
Ice dam related leaks are caused simply because the water could not escape from the shingled roof area.

Two types of attic water damage are common in cold climates: ice dams and condensation of water vapor on cold surfaces in the attic.
Ice dams sometimes occur on sloping roofs in climates with extended below freezing temperatures combined with several inches of snow.
Ice dams and attic condensation are caused by heat and moisture entering the attic.

Three things are required for an ice dam to form: snow, heat to melt the snow and cold to refreeze the melted snow into solid ice.
Ice dams can form when as little as 1 or 2 inches of snow accumulates on a roof - if the snowfall is followed by several days of sub-freezing temperatures.
Ice dams develop as snow on the upper part of the roof melts.

Since we have determined the main cause of ice dams to be an overly warm attic, a good start in inoculating your home against ice dams is to reduce the attic temperature.

During the last Ice Age (18,000 to 12,000 years ago), and in multiple previous Ice Ages, cataclysmic floods inundated portions of the Pacific Northwest from Glacial Lake Missoula, pluvial Lake Bonneville, and perhaps from subglacial outbursts.
This lake formed from glacial meltwater that was dammed by a lobe of the Canadian ice sheet.
Eventually, the ice receded northward far enough that the dam did not reform, and the flooding episodes ceased.
