 Dry Ice Blasting...A Better Cleaning
Dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning process using solid CO2 pellets (known as dry ice).
The final phase has the dry ice pellet explode on impact, and as the pellet warms it converts to a harmless CO2 gas, which expands rapidly underneath the contaminant surface.
Dry ice blasting is currently being used in a six-month project to clean the inside of the containment dome of a nuclear power plant in the Pacific Northwest.

The cold temperature of the dry ice pellets hitting the contaminant creates a micro-thermal shock (caused by the dry ice temperature of -79º C) between the surface contaminant and the substrate breaking the bond between the two.
Dry ice pellets are propelled out of the blasting gun at supersonic speed and impact the surface.

Scrub Zero - Dry Ice Blasting
They are portable, consume 30-50% less dry ice, and allow for a greater range of cleaning applications; from sensitive to aggressive – something “regular pellet blasting” cannot do.
Dry ice converts to CO2 vapor on surface impact, and is non-toxic (food grade CO2).
Dry Ice Blasting is 100% water free and therefore non-conductive.

 FLASHJET Subsystems
The CO2 Pellet Subsystem consists of the liquid CO2 storage vessel, Pelletizer and Blast Units, air compressor/aftercooler, air dryer, oil/water separator, receiver and hoses for delivery of clean high-pressure blast air and dry ice particles to the nozzle assembly.
The Process Control Subsystem hardware/software is responsible for controlling all the FLASHJET Process Subsystems, such as the CO2 Pellet, Flashlamp, Stripping Head, Effluent Capture, and Mobile Manipulator.
During FLASHJET Coatings Removal Process operation, the dry ice particle stream sweeps away the soot residue resulting from ablation of the coating, provides substrate cooling, and provides a CO2 rich atmosphere, which prevents combustion within the effluent capture shroud.

Sand blasting's replacement - use dry ice!
With other cleaning methods such as sand blasting, whether it be with solvents, sand blasting or some other means the cleaning agent becomes a secondary contaminant and must be disposed of as toxic waste along with the primary contaminant, However because the CO2 pellet vaporizes upon contact, the only waste created is the contaminant itself.

 Freezing rain 23/24 January 1996
More prolonged freezing rain and ice pellet events are far less common both in this country, and around north-western Europe in general, but may cause extensive damage, to trees and overhead cables for example, and accidents when and where they do occur.
Furthermore, in cases of freezing rain ahead of frontal systems, the delaying or prevention of the front arriving at any one place would also prolong a freezing rain/ice pellet event.
This event was untypical of the usual freezing rain events experienced over the British Isles, particularly in its persistence and spatial extent across central England and Wales, and was probably comparable with other notable freezing rain events over southern Britain such as those of late January 1940, late January/early February 1986 and January 1987.
