IceShare   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
IceShare is a P2P system for Ogg multimedia.
This file must already be known by the client and is typically supplied to the client by a URL, such as icet://127.0.0.1/something.ogg.
The Tracker, knowing which other IceShare Clients have the file already, will send the new Client to one or more other Clients for specific pieces of the file they've requested.

IceShare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IceShare is an unfinished peercasting system for Ogg multimedia.
This allows the broadcaster to only broadcast a stream once or twice, and allow the users to distribute it among themselves, so that not much bandwidth is needed from the originator.
IceShare intends to use BitTorrent's swarming philosophy to make this work but expects a much smarter tracker to orchestrate the flow of data through the network.

Iceshare is vapourware, but it's conceptually the coolest.
IceShare is better than Peercast for a number of reasons.
The intention of IceShare is for it to be integrated closely with the media player, so not only should icet:// links open your media player directly, but things such as seeking should work seamlessly.

IceShare - XiphWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
IceShare is called pseudo-P2P because the network relies on a traditional client-server model for managing transfers between IceShare peers on the network.
IceShare responds with a quick "I got it" for each page, thereby letting IceTracker know that the reported page is ready to be shared with others.
IceShare should also support byte-ranges for traditional HTTP download agents which are attempting to resume a lost transfer.

It has been in the planning stages since early 2004 but holdups in the development of other Xiph.org technologies have prevented much visible progress.
Clients use the IceT protocol (http://wiki.xiph.org/IceT) to connect to a Tracker and make a request for a file.

We of course can't max out the bandwidth for a day, the server is used by other projects (such as liveradio.indymedia.org) so we probobally want to cap ourselves at a quarter to half of the server's max.
This is limited only by the availability of translators to do the job, and it'd be good to have multiple translators for each language to ensure sustainability and prevent burn-out (translation may not be easy!).
Many IMCs and community groups that are involved with video work already have the ability to download and process video, including screening it directly from a laptop or exporting it to VHS tape for a screening event.

[xiph] Ogg Traffic / Release Announcements
Among other minor bugfixes, this release corrects a multithreading bug and an underflow problem that could cause a dramatic decoding slowdown on x86 processors.
It will be useable for streaming static Ogg files and continuous streams and support "on the fly" bitrate switching with multibitrate streams.
The project would benefit from Python, Java, and C developers to help build a suite of Iceshare player toolsets at this point in development.

[vorbis] Bitrate stripping?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Especially for streaming, there's alot to be gained by being able to send a single Ogg stream to Icecast and have it do the peeling on the fly.
For files, even, bitrate peeling would reduce storage space by allowing you to store just one copy of the media and have the IceShare servlet do the peeling as needed.
I also think we'll be seeing IceShare hitting the mainstream by this comming Summer.

[IMC-Video] P2P video   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Development has been continuing with IceShare, the streaming P2P system being developed at Xiph (the Icecast and Ogg group).
In brief, the concept behind IceShare is that websites will have links to media available on it with a icet://tracker:port/path URL.
It could be setup where video is published to the website with a traditional website form, and once uploaded, is then made available on the IceShare network as well.

Second, IceShare will be publically released as Beta around the same time as Theora.
IceShare is a pseudo-P2P system for sharing both live streaming media and archived media between the people who are accessing it.
This means that instead of needing huge dedicated servers for serving video all we'll need is a server to archive it somewhere and let the people accessing it do the rest.

Not by itself, but combined with ever increasing cycles/bandwidth/storage for your dollar, they all will make it irrelevant in 2-3 years.
The sad fact is that by the time bit peeling becomes a priority enough to implement it won't be far away from being just another nice but unimportant feature.

In the both the audio and video industry the format is commonly seen as a side-issue, deadlines and budgets often dictate what gets used.
If they end up using IceShare because it requires no royalties and works efficiently therefor saving them bandwidth they'll use it, and with it, Ogg.
This isn't because IceShare is hostile towards non-Ogg formats, as programs like "Darwin Stream Server" is about non-Quicktime formats, but because the primary advantage IceShare gives is that it works on the Ogg page level instead of arbitrary (meaningless) byte chunks.

There are other peer-to-peer networks in development too, such as PeerCast which allows you to broadcast an Internet radio or TV station with very little upstream bandwidth due to its distributed nature.
Other peer-to-peer broadcast tools, sometime called Peercasting, include the IceShare project, and FreeCast (http://www.freecast.org).
The files shared on such networks are often popular music files in mp3 format, and popular movies in MPEG-4 format.
