Fish Tales - What Fish is That - Department of Fisheries, Govt of Western Australia
Icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) is also known as mackerel icefish.  They might be confused with the Patagonian toothfish.  Toothfish live in the same places as icefish but they are not the same species.
Icefish take a long time to grow because the cold conditions slow their growth.  They reach a maximum length of 60cm and live for about 15 years.  They are mature adults when they are 22-26cm long and about 3-4 years old.
Icefish are carnivores so the major part of their diet is small swimming prawn-like crustaceans such as krill and mysids.  They also eat microscopic animals called zooplankton that occur in blooms within the open ocean.  Icefish are an important food source to other larger sub-Antarctic fish, seals and sea lions.

 The icefish cometh
Not only is the Mackerel Icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) a new delicacy for Australian tables but it is a sustainable one due to the certified, environmentally sound fishing practices adopted by Austral Fisheries Pty Ltd, the Western Australian fishery responsible for bringing it to Australia.
Icefish addresses both of those concerns as it will bear the blue oval Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) logo, witnessing the fact that Icefish has been certified as sustainably harvested.
The home of the Icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari), is the icy waters around Antarctica which have an average water temperature of 2 degrees Celsius (your fridge is about 4 degrees Celsius). The Icefish, rather than turn belly up thrives in the cold due to the production of a unique chemical within it’s body that works like anti-freeze.

ScienceDaily: Northeastern University Scientist Finds Answers In Antarctic Icefish
While most of the world took warmth and natural light for granted last month, Detrich and his colleagues were finding out firsthand how the icefishes survive and thrive without a normal oxygen transport system, and how their genetic makeup may eventually help treat blood diseases in humans.
Professor Detrich knows the potential applications that the study of icefishes can offer: lacking red blood cells and living only on the oxygen dissolved in their blood, the Antarctic icefishes provide a unique model system for determining the genetic regulation of blood cell formation.
