Hip hop music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Hip hop is an originally American cultural movement which is composed of four main parts: breakdancing and graffiti art, along with two more well-known aspects collectively known as hip hop music; they are rapping (emceeing) and DJing (although many DJs do not deal with hip hop music).
Another reason for hip hop's rise was the decline of disco, funk and rock in the mid- to late 70s.
Hip hop was popular there at least as far back as 1976 (first record: "Rhythm Talk", by Jocko Henderson in 1979, 1979 in music), and the New York Times dubbed Philly the Graffiti Capital of the world in 1971, due to the influence of such legendary graffiti artists as Cornbread.

Alternative hip hop (Bohemian hip hop) is a style of hip hop distinguished by socio-political lyrics, sparse beats that sample few and/or unusual sources (see jazz rap) and uniquely positive rhymes.
Alternative hip hop generally refers to a specific style of hip hop that is opposed to the mainstream sounds of gangsta rap.
However, certain other hip hop genres are also alternative and are sometimes referred to with the same term, including a mixture of heavy metal, hard rock and hip hop that would eventually come to be known as rapcore, and a mixture of 1970s-style soul music and hip hop called nu soul.

Rapping   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Rap music is one of the elements of hip hop; it is a form of rhyming lyrics spoken rhythmically over musical instruments, with a musical backdrop of sampling, scratching and mixing by DJs.
Rapping can be seen as one of the four elements of hip hop: MCing (rapping), DJing (mixing, cutting and scratching), graffiti, and breakdancing.
Thus the instrumentation of early sampled or sound system-based hip hop is the same as funk, disco, salsa, and other musics, such as metal and early techno such as oft cited Kraftwerk, usually highly popular or obscure, at the time: Voice, guitar, bass, drums and percussion.
