  Iceman - MSN Encarta
Iceman, popular name for the body of a late Stone Age man, which was discovered preserved by ice in the Italian Alps.
Although the Iceman’s clothing was in fragments, he was found to be wearing leather leggings and much-repaired shoes, a raincloak of woven grass, and some kind of trousers or kilt made of fur and leather.
Among his equipment was an axe, consisting of a copper head on a yew handle; a yew bow almost 80 cm (31 in) long and a deerskin quiver containing 14 arrows; a flint dagger; and fragments of a leather backpack.

 Iceman - Don Markstein's Toonopedia
Iceman, part of the first batch of Marvel Comics mutants, was introduced (along with the rest of the first batch) in X-Men #1, dated September, 1963.
Iceman (civilian name, Bobby Drake) was analogous to The Human Torch (young and brash, the team's semi-mature cut-up), but with an opposite super power (the ability to freeze things instantly, rather than burn them).
He even, at an early point in the series, developed a way of using his power to to travel through the air at high speed, analogous to the Torch's flame-powered flight — he'd freeze moisture from the air in front of him and slide along it, leaving a ribbon of ice as his trail.

The religion of Iceman (Bobby Drake) of the X-Men
Although Iceman was created as a sort of "All-American" teenager and was probably regarded by the writers as having a Christian background, the character's actual denominational affiliation was not overtly specified.
Iceman, on the other hand, seems like he is a being called Jewish just for the heck of it.
Iceman's ethnic diversity (because it has nothing to do with religion, he's half-Jewish by heritage, not by practice) is an attempt to give him a little more dimension, although it is kind of half-hearted.

Plus, when it's done right, as is the case on this issue, a writing team can get away with it, as frankly there's no rule that states all comics must devote part of their attention to plot advancement.
Plus, he's also got the comic book hero speech pattern perfected, as he's capable of having a conversation with a ball of ice.
In the end, the character is a pretty nifty little creation, and I'm glad to see he'll be sticking around for the rest of the miniseries, as it would be nice to see at least one trip to this part of the world that doesn't have Sunfire as the guest-hero.
