  Ichabod Goodwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ichabod Goodwin (October 10, 1796 - July 4, 1882) was the governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1859 to 1861.
Goodwin was born at North Berwick, Maine and educated in South Berwick.
Goodwin was elected a State Representative, running as a Whig, in 1838, 1843, 1844, 1850, 1854, and 1856.

Thomas Goodwin was a celebrated preacher in London, circa 1650, and was appointed by Oliver Cromwell to be President of Magdalen College at Oxford.
Captain Ichabod Goodwin, also of Berwick, was wounded at the battle of Ticonderoga, 8 July, 1758, and was mentioned in the commanding general's report to Secretary William Pitt, who became prime minister of England.
Ichabod Goodwin (son of Samuel Goodwin and Anna Gerrish and great-grandson of Captain Ichabod Goodwin) was governor of New Hampshire in the early 1800s.

The Goodwin house was built on the foundation of the Spencer Garrison, a stone fort said to have been able to shelter a hundred settlers.
Gen. Ichabod Goodwin, the rebuilder of Old Fields in 1797 and the man most often associated with the home, was the grandson of Mehitable Goodwin, a woman whose story Jewett relates in “Old Town of Berwick.” Captured by Indians in 1675, she was rescued only after being taken to Canada.
Gen. Goodwin became a farmer and leading citizen, major-general of militia for York and Cumberland Counties, and a founder of Berwick Academy in 1791.

Of particular interest are the hemlock archway, the garden summerhouse, the border of climbing roses, the trellis on the piazza, and a variety of garden ornaments and furnishings representing the period.
Goodwin's diaries are growing in the garden including fringe tree, golden chain tree, weigela, mountain laurel, peonies, spirea, clematis and plume poppies.

The final component of the city’s revitalization project for the park on Islington Street is conservation of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
The monument features elements unique to Portsmouth’s history including a relief of the USS Kearsarge, the city seal, the New Hampshire state badge and a bust of Ichabod Goodwin, the wartime governor of New Hampshire.
In 1955, the center section of the sculpture was removed because it was deemed unsafe.

From 1801 to 1850 an average of nine vessels per year were built on the Piscataqua River, and every decade the vessels were made larger and more costly.
Starting with an average of 200 tons in 1801, there was hardly any increase until 1827, when thousands assembled to see the launching of a full rigged ship, the Sarah Parker, of about 400 tons, that was built for Captain Ichabod Goodwin.
In the '30s and '40s the average rose to 450 tons and in the '50s the eighty-four vessels launched averaged 90O tons, one, The Sierra Nevada, being of 1,952 tons.

On April 15, 1861, the day following the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln issued a call for 75,000 volunteers for three months service.
The next day, New Hampshire Governor Ichabod Goodwin issued a call for one regiment of volunteers.
The Civil War lasted four years rather than three months and before it ended in April of 1865, New Hampshire had supplied the Union with eighteen regiments, including two cavalry units, four artillery units and three companies of sharpshooters.

Ichabod Goodwin's company from York in 1758 which had been present for the campaign of Ticonderoga during July included a John Dailey.
In 1762, Capt. Johnson Moulton's company (he had been Ensign in Capt. Goodwin's company in 1758), John Daley was listed as a private.
The only land record I find within York County for David Daley is dated 18 May 1758.
