In the Shade of Spring Leaves: The Life and Writings of Higuchi Ichiyo, a Woman of Letters in Meiji Japan
After celebrating a golden age that was hundreds of years ahead of other civilized nations, women in Japan quickly fell from the cultural vanguard they had enjoyed during the Heian and were silent throughout the succession of bakufu governments that ended with the Meiji restoration in 1868.
Ichiyo is widely credited as one of the first female voices to re-emerge after this extended silence.
Though her career was cut short by her early death, several of her short stories are still in wide circulation in Japan and elsewhere.

Also discuss Higuchi Ichiyo's life and her writings.
According to Robert Lyons Danly, Ichiyo's work "reveals an atmosphere altogether characteristic of Meiji and modern man: a yearning for freedom from the constraints of conformity, a sad, slow crystallizing sense that one's dreams-whether of independence or of true rapport with another human being-are all beyond consummation" (133).
When writing of Ichiyo's works, Robert Lyons Danly says, "Her final parcel of stories addressed society's relegation of half its members to an oppressed, cipherlike existence." How is this applicable to "The Thirteenth Night"?

Sentimentalism is often viewed as a conservative mode of literary imagination, whereby an author occludes social problems with tears.
I demonstrate that at least in the case of Higuchi Ichiyo’s “Jusan’ya” (Thirteenth night, 1895), the story of a woman who is persuaded by her family not to divorce her husband, sentimentalism can be read differently.
In this essay, I make use of historicist reading strategies in order to show how a classical rhetoric pressed into the service of sentimentality is dialogically engaged with an emergent ideology of the bourgeois nuclear family and how the text can be read as a concerted critique of that ideology.
