RedIRIS - Forum on trace fossils
Ichnology is an Earth Science discipline devoted to the study of the fossil record of behavior and narrowly linked to paleontology and sedimentary geology.
The increasing interest on ichnology is reflected by the successful celebration of several periodical meetings (Ichnofabric Workshop, Bioerosion Workshop, Ichnotaxonomy Workshop, etc.), by the increasing frequency of ichnology sessions in national and international geology and paleontology meetings, and by the reedition of the Ichnology Newsletter.
Ichnology Newsletter is an annual publication that include news, reviews of congresses, meetings, books, etc., a list of the addresses and current work of a great number of ichnologists and the references on trace fossils published during the year, among other things.

Implicit to this definition is that the traces made by plants and animals reflect some sort of behavior.
Ichnology can be divided into two major subdivisions: paleoichnology (the study of ancient traces) and neoichnology (the study of modern traces).
Most ichnologists are involved in paleoichnology but a considerable number also study neoichnology for the comparison of modern equivalents (and their trace makers) to ancient traces.

About the Author   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
His main research interests lie in ichnology, the study of plant and animal traces (such as tracks, trails, burrows, and coprolites), and how it can be applied to interpreting behavior.
His interests are in both modern and ancient ichnology, using a comparative approach that looks at how traces are made and get preserved in the fossil record, then testing how accurately these traces reflect the behavioral interactions of organisms with their environments.
He has presented results of his research at more than 30 professional meetings on a variety of topics in paleontology and geoscience education, and his field studies have taken him to 23 states in the U.S. and 9 foreign countries thus far.

The Application of Ichnology to Palaeoenvironmental and Stratigraphic Analysis attempts to balance the scales by highlighting the value of ichnofossils in the interpretation of the stratigraphic record.
Furthermore, many of the chapters represent myopic treatments of their respective depositional settings and are not well enough integrated to facilitate clear understanding of the ichnological differences between paleoenvironments.
Another factor that limits the accessibility of this book to those who lack experience in ichnology is the copious references to ichnotaxa without accompanying illustrations.

Ichnology (or, in this case, neoichnology) is thus probably one of the first applied sciences in human history, born out of necessity for survival.
Other aspects of ichnology, such as paleoichnology, became known later in human history, including the observation of dinosaur tracks in Mesozoic strata by Native Americans and other aboriginal peoples and the first recognition of some coprolites as feces in the 17th century.
Ichnology in the 1980's was represented by a renaissance in vertebrate ichnology, especially with regard to dinosaur tracks and dinosaur eggs.

Ichnology is an interdisciplinary subject that brings together sedimentologists, paleontologists, stratigraphers, and geochemists to unravel the post-depositional history of sedimentary rocks with respect to the lasting effects that the activities of small animals and plants have on sediment properties and stratification.
Geologic problem solving in the realm of ichnology, practical applications and conceptual models will be emphasized, including a thorough introduction to recognition, classification and preservation of biogenic structures and the application of basic principles and new advances in ichnology to solving geologic problems in the areas of sedimentology.
Topics include general models of bioturbation, animal-sediment relationships, paleoenvironmental interpretations based on trace fossil associations, sedimentologic implications of biogenic textures and fabrics, the influence of bioturbation on early diagenic processes, such as differential cementation and selective mineralization, and the implications of burrowing on fluid flow pathways in hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs.

Dinosaur Traksites - Portugal - Jazidas
Although part of a worldwide renaissance in the study of fossil footprints, the level of interest in scientific documentation and conservation of tracksites witnessed, since 1990, must be considered remarkable by any objective standard.
The catalyst for accelerated interest in dinosaur ichnology was the study of a long dinosaur trackway discovered in 1985 (Coke and Monteiro, 1986) in a disused quarry at Pego Longo (Carenque) site (Santos et al., 1991, 1992a,b).
Under normal circumstances the trackway probably would have been described and relegated to the scientific archives but in this case, however, the tracksite was directly in the path of a motorway construction project.
