In contrast, MK Benny Elon, head of the Ichud Leumi-Mafdal (National Union-National Religious Party) is the only right-wing leader who has formulated an alternative peace plan, written in the language of international conflict resolutions; he has been making inroads with it among senior American officials.
Convinced that unity within the right-wing is essential to building the strength we require to save our country, Benny Elon has worked hard these past few months at negotiating a joint list with Mafdal (NRP) and finally achieved this goal in early February.
A weak Ichud Leumi-Mafdal alongside a strong Likud may result in a Likud-Labor-Liberman-Hareidi government.

Another opinion favors a binational state in which Arabs and Jews live together while enjoying some type of autonomy.
Variants of the idea were proposed by Chaim Weizmann in the 1930s and by the Ichud (Unity) group in the 1940s, which included such prominent figures as Judah Magnes (first dean of The Hebrew University) and Martin Buber.
The emergence of Israel as a Jewish state with a small Arab minority made the idea irrelevant, but it was revived after the 1967 war left Israel in control of a large Arab population.

 The Head Heeb: Election day
EST): With 99.5 percent of the vote counted, Kadima has 28 mandates, Avoda 20, Shas 13, Yisrael Beiteinu 12, Likud 11, Ichud Leumi-Mafdal 9, Pensioners 7, UTJ 6, Meretz 4 and the combined Arab parties 10.
Based on the final count including the soldiers' votes, I got four bullseyes (Avoda, Ichud Leumi-Mafdal, UTJ and Ra'am-Ta'al) and four others within the range, so I was at least close on more than half the parties.
Ichud Leumi-Mafdal and Yisrael Beiteinu seem to have staked out fairly clear positions; the former is the national-religious party, and the latter is the secular neoliberal party that, um, doesn't much like minorities.

If Ichud Leumi-Yisrael Beiteinu resigns, the pair can always point to their Likud origins, their tutelage under Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin, and their education in the Jabotinski school of thought to reinforce their entry into the government and meet the needs of the Right.
At a meeting of the Knesset Committee for Immigration and Absorption last week it was reported that ten years ago an average of 340 people converted to Judaism every year, while today some 4,000 people convert to Judaism every year including the Falashmora, i.e.
Committee chairman Tzvi Handel (Ichud Leumi): "The number of people seeking conversion requires the establishment of an improved, well-oiled conversion system to replace the current one, which does not meet the demand."

A joint list—call it Achdut—consisting of Ichud Leumi, Shas, Mafdal, and United Torah Judaism (UTJ) would have 29 seats: Shas — 11; Ichud Leumi — 7; Mafdal — 6; UTJ — 5.
The formation of Achdut is a tacit admission that it was a serious mistake for Ichud Leumi and Mafdal to join the Likud government, especially with Shinui, if only because the Likud and Shinui chairmen (respectively, Ariel Sharon and Tommy Lapid) favor a Palestinian state.
The same may be said of both Ichud Leumi (National Union) and the shrunken Likud.

I'm not sure that Ichud Leumi (National Union) and Meretz/Yachad really have any reason to exist as separate parties now.
Ichud Leumi is still significantly to the right of the Likud on conflict-related issues, and Meretz is still to the left of Avoda.
In any event, the right may be in the process of acquiring a similar handicap, with Ichud Leumi increasingly putting itself off the political map.

It was not easy for the Prime Minister to get the Knesset to pass the Disengagement Law.
The opponents of disengagement, headed by Ichud Leumi MKs, have continued to wage a stubborn campaign against every stage of approval of the law, against approval of the State Budget, and against many specific clauses of the law.
Unfortunately this tremendous parliamentary effort did not succeed in preventing the passing of this evil law, but this does not mean that our forces are taking a rest.
