Tube stations were deep underground and had a characteristic design due to their circular construction.

Beginning with tube stock, perhaps the most non-standard "Standard" stock in the world was used on the tube lines from the early 1920s until the mid 1960s, when the last was withdrawn.

Line facts - Transport for London
The company then decided to abandon its flat fare policy and their first fare change came in July 1907, when a fare of 3d or three old pence for a journey of eight stations or more was introduced, although the name "Two-Penny Tube" continued for many years.
At the new Greenford station, the entrance hall was at ground level but the railway was on a viaduct, and thus became the first, and only, station on the London Underground to have escalators leading from street level UP to the trains.
Other tube railway promotions of the time were also producing poor responses, and none of the early tube railways were able to be built without the aid of substantial support from either a finance company or a contractor.

 Ickenham: Guide to Zone 6
Two final points; Ickenham is within ten minutes' walk of West Ruislip tube station (also in Zone 6).
The West Ruislip tube sign sports the subscript "(FOR ICKENHAM)".
The road leading to the station is badly lit, and a large metal fence which wouldn't be out of place in Guantanamo Bay forces you to turn left.

SSBD.NET :: same same but different
My brother told me that St. John's Wood tube station in London is the only tube station you can spell without using any letters from the word "Mackerel".
I thought it would be more interesting to look at stations for which there is only 1 word in the whole English language which satisfies the criterion.
There are many many other words (I think my dictionary yielded about 640) which fulfill the same criteria.

rodcorp: London Tube Map with Walklines: sometimes it's quicker to walk
One of the very few weaknesses of the standard tube map is that its distortion of geography (a very successful attempt to present the different stations and lines more clearly) sometimes means that it's not clear when the tube trip is unnecessary.
But here's a slightly altered map showing which stations are an arbitrary and as-the-crow-flies 500 metres apart from each other (there are many more stations 600, 700+ metres from each other).
The original tube map used is here (385k gif), and is obviously copyright Transport For London.

 Geofftech - Tube Challenge - Tube 4
Although we had a brand new route, there were some bits which were done the same way as on previous attempts as there is no other realistic way of doing them, which meant that we did the run between Ickenham and West Ruislip again.
And yet, at that moment, the station reopened, so we rudely pushed our way through to the front, and jumped on a train that came straight away and was going where we wanted it to!

Of all the stations in all of London beginning with the letter I, this had to be the furthest from anywhere (The other being Island Gardens).

Apparently according to the Sunday Telegraph only 14% of commuters questioned were in favour of mobile phones at all stations and not the "inflated" 83% which tube bosses gave to the phone companies so they'd invest in the operation.
