Icky Mettle is the only Archers album with which I am familiar but my opinion of it has remained steafast since I bought it 6 years ago.

The Archers of Loaf burst onto the indie/college scene in 1993 with the electric "Icky Mettle", receiving critical praise for their efforts.
I personally think the best Archers of Loaf album was their first, Icky Mettle, and that each one after that was slightly worse than the one before (although i love them all, and wouldn't give any of them lower than 4 stars).
This album, their 3rd release after Icky Mettle and the GOAT EP, seemed to be a little heavier on the feedback and noise, and s little lighter on catchy melodies.

Shame too, since Archers of Loaf was one of the better "college radio" bands to come out of the early 90's.
For variety, there's the intentionally funny "Toast," the addictive "Fat," and the scorching "Sick File." Fans of slacker/college rock should give Icky Mettle a try.

This is the album that is considered by many to be their most focused musical statement, and, along with a couple Pavement and Guided By Voices songs, easily deserves credit for influencing hundreds of bands across the country.
As charming as they were, I never especially liked Archers of Loaf - I only listened to Icky Mettle a few times, and never all the way through - but I kept an eye on them anyway.
This year they have 2 new releases: a collection of b-sides and rarities, The Speed of Cattle, and a full-length album, All The Nations Airports, both of which are out on Alias, the Archers' longtime record label.

It includes a number of great tunes that definitely would have been missed otherwise and serves as an excellent companion to the band's two albums, 1993's Icky Mettle and last year's Vee Vee.
The Archers of Loaf's distinctive post-hardcore blend, which sounds like a merger between early Replacements and the vocal inflection of the Cure's Robert Smith, more than adequately carries most of the songs on this compilation.
The five Peel Session tracks, "Smokin Pot in the City," "Mutes in the Steeple," "Revenge," "Freezing Point" and "Backwash" (an alternate version of the one that appears on Icky Mettle) are instant fun.

I’ll admit that Icky Mettle does not show a great deal of diversity but it features just enough to get by without being repetitive.
Now I’m not saying that Icky Mettle is any Slanted and Enchanted or Keep it Like A Secret but it’s definitely an album worth your time if you’re into noise-rock or indie-rock since the music is hard rocking, chaotic, fuzzy, compelling, and extremely catchy.
Although it’s not as structured or melody driven as it could of been Icky Mettle is still an excellent album that any fan of indie music will enjoy.

Fortunately for me, (the shortly-thereafter proud owner of a copy of their debut, “Icky Mettle”), there was no real drop-off in the band’s standard across the rest of the album.
It is represents some of the early steps of a man, Eric Bachmann, who has gone on to wow us with a different but equally impressive beast in Crooked Fingers.
Basically, if you do not own a copy of “Icky Mettle”, get one.
