  ICON: A Hero's Welcome
ICON: A HERO'S WELCOME reprints the award-winning first eight issues of ICON by Dwayne McDuffie and M. Bright, with a new cover by M. Bright and an introduction by Reginald Hudlin, director of "House Party," Boomerang" and "The Great White Hype." Full color on Mando paper.
Some of you might sneer at attaching such importance to creating comic books (it shows a certain success for Milestone that you are reading this introduction, anyway), but for people who have suffered with "a dream deferred" for too long, having our collective fantasies delineated and distributed across the country is empowerment indeed.
In fact, ICON is such a revolutionary creation that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas called the Milestone offices to tell them how much he enjoyed their work.

 NEWSARAMA
Epic Comics launched with the first issue of Dreadstar in late 1982 and was shipped only to direct market comic shops, which were a growing force in the marketplace at that time, and were starting to nibble away at the dominance of newsstands as the major outlet of comic books.
Ten or so years later, with much hullabaloo, Marvel brought Epic back in 2003, with the promise that it would again publish creator-owned comics, with the promise that anyone, as long as their work met the Epic standards, could be published.
Icon, on the other hand, is a new imprint created separate from the traditional Marvel Imprints specifically mandated to work with top properties and creators outside of Marvel's core properties and imprints.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Katy Keene
But at MLJ/Archie Comics, they'd already found the style that would sustain the company for the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st — light humor, designed to appeal to teens.
At first, the comic was filled with reprints of Woggon's 1950s artwork; but later, other artists, including Dan DeCarlo (creator of Josie and co-creator of Sabrina) and John Lucas (who for years had claimed to be Katy's #1 fan), began crafting new stories — with new fashions sent in by a new generation of readers.
Today, Katy Keene is not one of the Archie Comics superstars — but she still occupies a corner of the company's Web site, as do The Black Hood, The Jaguar and other characters the company doesn't emphasize, but still wants to keep at least in the corner of the public eye.
