  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Iconoclasm
A Nestorian bishop, Xenaeas of Hierapolis, was a conspicuous forerunner of the Iconoclasts (Hardouin, IV, 306).
The sixth session was occupied with the Iconoclast synod of 754; its claim to be a general council was denied, because neither the pope nor the three other patriarchs had a share in it.
During the second iconoclastic persecution, in 824, the Emperor Michael II wrote to Louis the Pious the letter which, besides demanding that the Byzantine monks who had escaped to the West should be handed over to him, entered into the whole question of image-worship at length and contained vehement accusations against its defenders.

Although there are vast differences in the Iconoclast of today and Brann's Iconoclast of yesteryear, the modern-day editors hope to bring to the worldwide web a slate of ideas that will inspire citizens to not only think about issues, but act upon their convictions.
While the editors of the new Iconoclast do not pretend to agree with Brann's stand on various issues, especially where religion and race is concerned, the tone of his ponderings can find themselves useful in unraveling modern-age institutions that live and prosper at the supreme disadvantage of common citizens.
The new Iconoclast will challenge status-quo monopolies of thought and illuminate new perspectives that were there all along but which denizens have been too blinded to see.

 Handbook of Texas Online: ICONOCLAST
The Iconoclast, a widely read Texas magazine during the late 1890s, was first published in Austin in 1891 by William Cowper Brann.
The first issue of the quarterly Texas Iconoclast appeared in March 1892, and Brann turned the management of the publication over to Thomas M. Bowers, who directed the publication until its demise in 1894, when the name and the equipment of the publication reverted back to Brann.
Much of the popularity of the revised Iconoclast appeared to be directly attributable to the pugnacity of Brann, who received national publicity as a victim of physical attacks in October and November 1897, brought on by his outspoken commentary.
