  Introduction
Evolution is the unifying paradigm, the organizing principle of biology.
Based on this, he claims that their treatments of these icons are so rife with inaccuracies, out-of-date information, and downright falsehoods that their discussions of the icons should be discarded, supplemented, or amended with "warning labels" (which he provides).
The Miller-Urey experiment isn't considered "evidence for evolution;" it is considered part of our experimental research about the origin of life and is discussed in chapters and sections on the "history of life." Likewise, Darwin's finches are used as examples of an evolutionary process (natural selection), not as evidence for evolution.

 Icons of Evolution
Evolution is the principal foundation of the naturalistic world view, presented by many in academia as the only scientific, and therefore, objective, view of reality.
Icons of Evolution will help draw the evolutionary establishment out from behind the protective bulwark of its authority and force it to defend its theory on the basis of the evidence.
These problems aside, Icons of Evolution is a landmark work and deserves to be read and studied by all who have an interest in the controversy surrounding not only the teaching of evolution, but also the very theory of evolution itself.

Biological evolution is the theory that all living things are modified descendants of a common ancestor that lived in the distant past.
Some of these icons of evolution present assumptions or hypotheses as though they were observed facts; in Stephen Jay Gould's words, they are "incarnations of concepts masquerading as neutral descriptions of nature." Others conceal raging controversies among biologists that have far-reaching implications for evolutionary theory.
But the textbooks and popular presentations rely primarily on the icons of evolution, so as far as many biologists are concerned the icons are the evidence for evolution.

Evolution is promulgated as an ideology, a secular religion." Ruse argues, and I agree, that anyone who does this should be careful to distinguish between science, and philosophical viewpoints based on science.
Given that the subtitle of Icons of Evolution is "Why much of what we teach about evolution is wrong", one might naturally expect that his Chapter 11 would be largely devoted to discussing the currently accepted evidence for human evolution, and showing why it is invalid.
It seems as though the evidence for human evolution was too strong for Wells to wish to attack it head on and that he instead had to resort to undermining it.

Evolution by natural selection and the origin of life are entirely different subjects.
DNA studies have, of course, confirmed the principles of evolution.
In science it is the consensus of thousands of researchers and theorists, working for over 100 years, that evolution by natural selection is the foundation of all of biology.

Jonathan Wells' Icons of Evolution - Review by J. Coyne
Icons is a work of stealth creationism, and strives to debunk darwinism using the familiar rhetoric of biblical creationists, including scientific quotations out of context, incomplete summaries of research, and muddled arguments.
Perhaps an observer in the early Cenozoic could not have predicted that a lineage of ungulates would lose their hindlimbs as they became aquatic, but the development of the hindlimb in embryonic whales can be understood only as a result of descent with modification from a four-legged ancestor.
Icons is exactly as even-handed and intellectually honest as one would expect from someone whose "prayers convinced me that I should devote my life to destroying Darwinism".

Icons of Evolution is a controversial book by the Intelligent Design advocate and fellow of the Discovery Institute, Jonathan Wells, and a 2002 video about the book.
In it, Wells attempts to overthrow the paradigm of evolution by attacking how it is taught contending that the 10 case studies used to illustrate and teach evolution are flawed.

Jonathan Wells' Icons of Evolution - Review by J. Coyne
Unlike atomic theory, evolution has obvious theological implications, and thus it has been the target of concerted opposition, even though the inference of common ancestry of living things is as basic to biology as atoms are to physics.
Individual sentences in Icons are usually technically correct, but they are artfully strung together to take the reader off the path of real evolutionary biology and into a thicket of misunderstanding.
The Cambrian explosion is supposed to be a "serious challenge to Darwinian evolution" because "phyla and classes appear right at the start." Wells is wrong to claim that the Cambrian appearance of major body plans supposedly puts paleontologists into a tizzy; actually, they regard it simply as a phenomenon yet to be explained.

The documentary “Icons of Evolution” is a good representative of the current argument from those who have, in the past, argued against the teaching of evolutionary theory in public schools.
This “icon” is kind of a mix between Darwin’s finches and the fruit fly in concept.
The final so-called “icon” of evolution is the “tree of life”, which is a metaphorical concept used by evolution to explain the relationships between all organisms.

However, stating that an inaccuracy in general biology textbooks is proof that the modern theory of evolution must be wrong is beyond ludicrous.
All that is offered in "Icons of Evolution" is an attack on evolution; no alternative hypothesis mentioned (other than of course we humans being created with a purpose by an Intelligent Designer) is even considered until the last few pages.
"Icons" shows quite clearly that Wells believes in some sort of Intelligent Designer theory, and is nothing more than an attempt to bring back the Biblical view of the purposeful creation of life by an Intelligent Designer.

 Review of Icons of Evolution
The purpose of Icons of Evolution, Jonathan Wells claims, is to encourage people to ask questions about evolution, and to document that "students and the public are being systematically misinformed about the evidence for evolution".
The "Icons" referred to in the title of this book are commonly taught examples of evolution, which, according to Wells, are all myths created and maintained by a few scheming evolutionists who know they are not true.

Throughout Icons you are presented with the supposition that there is a grand conspiracy being conducted by leading evolutionists, apparently with help from the National Geographic Society.
To get around the problem that the overwhelming majority of biologists and other scientists understand and accept evolution as one of the basic tenet of science, Wells assumes that they are either part of the conspiracy or dupes unable to comprehend how they are being conned by their colleagues.

The presence of false facts in textbooks is indeed an indication of something--but whether it is of dogmatic Darwinist propaganda or mere laziness on the part of textbook writers, many of Wells' arguments raise crucial questions about evidence for evolutionary theory or naturalistic accounts for the origins of life on Earth.
The natural chemical origin of life was said to not belong in Icons of Evolution because it is conceptually different from the actual "evolution" of life.
Evidence for evolution is based upon inference, and inferences make a much weaker argument than evidence from repeatable observations, such as those which verify atomic theory.

It is precisely because evidence for the two basic elements of Darwin’s theory is so thin that my critics defend the icons of evolution rather than replace them with better examples.

According to neo-Darwinism (the modern form of Darwin’s theory), evolution results primarily from two factors: natural selection, which acts on variations already present in a population, and genetic mutations, which supposedly provide new variations which then become raw materials for evolution.
Far from being raw material for evolution, the four-winged fruit fly is an evolutionary dead end.
Reviewer Raff objects to my characterization of this icon: “Wells misuses the science he learned at Berkeley,” he writes, since “despite some pictures of suitably iconic four-winged Drosophila [the generic name for fruit flies], the discussion of genes and development in Icons of Evolution“ is “shabby and misleading.” (Raff, p.

If evolution did occur, no novel functions were created apart from a few different destructive venoms--and these venoms have themselves had between 20-50 Ma to develop into their fairly similar forms.
Evolution's problem lies in the mutation-selection mechanism, where mutations--the ultimate originator of all genetic variation--must somehow account for the origin of the vast and often irreducible complexity of life on earth.
Regardless of whether or not the fruit fly icon is common in textbooks, the overextrapolation in claims of the ability of simple mutations to cause great morphological change is common among evolutionists, and this chapter is a vital component of a book debunking exaggerated evidences used to prove evolution.
