Start / T / The Proceedings of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences / January 01, 2001 / Comparative distribution and abundance of catfishes (Ictaluridae and Ariidae) in an oligohaline upper estuary.
Juvenile I. furcatus were mostly caught at stations around the perimeter of the lake and away from the source of estuarine waters, whereas juvenile I. punctatus were more randomly distributed about the lake.

Cave members of Ictaluridae are difficult to observe in the wild, thus, little is known of their life history or behavior.
The specimen, a whole pickled animal, was scanned by Richard Ketcham on 27 February 1998 along its coronal axis for a total of 1960 slices, each slice 0.11 mm thick, with an interslice spacing of 0.10 mm (for a slice overlap of 0.01 mm).

 FDA/CFSAN/OS Seafood Letter - Catfish - Jan. 2003
The purpose of this letter is to provide information about current market names for fish that are outside of the family Ictaluridae and that were previously marketed with the term "catfish" in their names.
Due to a recent amendment to section 403 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), use of the term "catfish" on labeling, in whole or as part of the common or usual name, is now prohibited for fish in interstate commerce that are not classified within the family Ictaluridae.
Section 10806 amends the food misbranding provision of the FFDCA (section 403) to provide that a food shall be deemed to be misbranded "[i]f it purports to be or is represented as catfish, unless it is fish classified within the family Ictaluridae."

FDA/CFSAN - Guidance for Industry: Implementation of Section 403(t) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21 ...
This guidance represents the agency's current thinking on acceptable common or usual names for fish bearing the name "catfish" that are not from the family Ictaluridae.
This prior guidance reflected what FDA believed were names for seafood that could be used by importers and domestic distributors and sellers consistent with the food naming provisions of the Act.
New section 403(t) of the Act, however, overrides this guidance and precludes the use of the term "catfish" in labels or any other labeling, unless the fish is from the Ictaluridae family.

Description: Abstract: The National Fish Broodstock Registry (NFBR) was initiated in 1991 as a cooperative project of the Fish and Wildlife Service division of Fish Hatcheries and the National Biological Service, Research and Development Laboratory.
The NFBR consists of a series of databases designed to catalog performance information on managed wild and domestic broodstocks of six fish families: trout (salmonidae, excluding anadromous salmon), catfish (Ictaluridae), sturgeon (Acipenseridae), paddlefish (Polyodolontidae), perch (Percidae), and sunfish (Centrarchidae).
While broodstock information is needed on all managed fish species, the separate databases of the NFBR have been developed sequentially starting with the species where broodstock information has been developed.

Furthermore, althoughsome fishes, such as hagfishes and lampreys (Petromyzontidae), lack paired fins, the paired appendages of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are considered homologous to the paired fins of fishes.
Likewise, the scales that cover many common bony fishes are not a universally acceptable distinguishing feature, because numerous unrelated groups of fishes lack scales, for example, the hagfishes, the lampreys, and the North American freshwater catfishes (Ictaluridae).
Moreover, those fishes that possess scales may be more or less covered by one of several basic scale types, for example, the placoid scales of sharks, the ganoid scales of gars, and the bony ridge scales of salmon and basses.
