Icyball was a small refrigeration system marketed to homes and businesses without electricity.
The absorption principle of refrigeration (the basis of the Icyball's operation) had been known for decades before Keith built his device (Ferdinand Carre first demonstrated the principle in 1858).
Icyballs were sold not only in North America, but also in Europe, South America, and Africa.

IcyBall was a name given to two early refrigerators, one made by Australian Sir Edward Hallstrom in 1923, and the other design patented by David Forbes Kieth of Toronto, Ontario, Canada (filed 1927, granted 1929), and manufactured by American Powel Crosley Jr., who bought the rights to the device.
The Crosley Icyball was an example of a gas-absorption refrigerator, as can be found today in Recreational vehicles or campervans.
Several features were incorporated to improve the efficiency (bubbling the ammonia vapor through the water) and to minimize the amount of water transferred to the cold-side ball during the regeneration cycle (trapping structures).

Larry Hall liked the concept of the Icyball but thought it was a bit large so he made a smaller version that could be used in a standard size ice chest when he went camping.
Larry improved on the original design by adding a shut off valve in the connecting tube so after the Icyball was fully charged it could be shut off and the cooling cycle delayed till later, when you needed it.
The Icyball isn't exactly as simple as it looks- I found by experiment that you definitely need the internal bubbler tube and check valve (a very clever liquid type check valve) as shown in the patent drawings.

Modular solar powered heat pump - Patent 4199952
To use the Icyball unit, one heated the generator ball, which contained a concentrated ammonia solution, to drive off an ammonia rich vapor which migrated to and condensed in the condenser ball.
After the refrigerant had been reabsorbed, the "weak liquor" remaining in the condensor ball was drained to the generator ball, and the cycle could be repeated.
The tube connecting the two chambers of the Icyball unit had an orifice with constrained the flow of vapor back to the generator ball during the reabsorption (refrigeration) phase of the cycle.

Icyballs deliver deep heat to all areas of the body due to the natural suppleness of the ball and the way it molds around countours and allows the heat to penetrate while applying compression and decompression.
