The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) is an 890 square mile (2,300 km²) complex located in the Idaho desert between the towns of Arco and Idaho Falls.
It was established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) and subsequently renamed to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) in the 1970s.

During the 1970s, the name of the Site was changed from the National Reactor Testing Station to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory to reflect its broadened mission into areas like biotechnology, energy and materials research, and conservation and renewable energy.
The Site’s name changed again in the spring of 1997 to the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory to reflect a major refocus of the laboratory, present and long term, toward engineering applications and environmental solutions for our nation.
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL), an 890-square-mile section of desert in southeast Idaho, was established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station.

 UNM Alliance Wins Contract to Manage Idaho National Laboratory
Idaho National Laboratory is being created by the U.S. Department of Energy by combining the research and development components of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory West.
The University of New Mexico School of Engineering is included in an academic alliance that will contract to manage the Idaho National Laboratory for ten years for the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Department of Energy says one of the laboratory's first major tasks will be to lead an international research and development effort to create an advanced nuclear energy technology called the Next Generation Nuclear Plant.

 The Shaw Group and the University of Missouri Jointly Seek Management and Operations Contract for the Idaho National Laboratory
The UM-led consortium of universities that includes Idaho State University, the University of Idaho, Boise State University and others provides access to a national network of nuclear science and engineering education and related research programs.
The Shaw Missouri Idaho team will draw upon the expertise of Shaw's Stone & Webster unit, an architect/engineering and construction organization that is one of the few commercial operations that can trace their nuclear roots to the first days of the Manhattan Project in the early 1940s.

The Idaho National Laboratory will be created in February by the merger of Argonne-West and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory.

Alden Research Laboratory, Inc. (Alden) and Northern Research and Engineering Corporation (NREC) are conducting a research program to develop a new turbine runner to substantially reduce fish mortability at hydroelectric projects.
Published laboratory bioassays and similar studies of the responses of fish to the component stresses of turbine passage were reviewed, with the goal of deriving biological criteria for the turbine designers.

 Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory
Army Col. James Moran announced today that the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory's highly-successful tank armor project will be expanded.
"I wanted an M1 tank placed here in Idaho to signify the importance of this facility to the Army and to thank the employees who have done a great job over the years building armor to protect our young men and women on the front lines," said Moran.
Moran, Army Program Manager for the Abrams Tank System, made the announcement at a dedication of an M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, which is on loan to INEEL as recognition of Site employees' performance and dedication to the program.

 Idaho Delegation Reacts to Laboratory Restructuring
WASHINGTON, DC - Idaho's Congressional delegation reacted to the U.S. Department of Energy's announcement today to compete and award separate contracts for what was previously the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory West.
"It is important that we move Idaho's national labs away from an environment where they fight for their existence on a year to year basis and position them with strength for the future," Senator Larry Craig said.

 SL-1 Accident - Idaho National Engineering Laboratory
At 9:01pm, alarms sounded at the fire stations and security headquarters of the U.S. National Reactor Testing Station where the reactor was located.
A small, 3MW experimental BWR called SL-1 (Stationary Low-Power Plant No. 1) in Idaho was destroyed on January 3, 1961, when a control rod was removed manually.
Richard McKinley was interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
