It is the largest city in the Hunsrück region of southwest Germany, and has a population of around 34,400.
The towns of Idar and Oberstein belonged to the barons of Oberstein (who later became the counts of Falkenstein) until 1670.
In 1865, both Idar and Oberstein were chartered as cities, and finally in 1933, they united (along with the smaller towns of Algenrodt and Tiefenstein) to form the modern town of Idar-Oberstein.

Many cutters in Idar claim that agate mining and cutting dates back to Roman times, although the evidence so far — some Roman settlements nearby and a Roman road that runs near an important source of cutting material — is inconclusive.
Idar's highly specialized workplace is as much a part of the town's identity today as it was in its heyday, even though what remains of this picturesque technology is now used almost solely for display to tourists.
Some of the original businesses in Idar and Oberstein are still going strong today, and the joined towns have been widely recognized as the most significant European cutting center for gemstones other than diamond since the 18th century.

What is known is that the Roman invaders were finding precious stones in the area over 2000 years ago, but Oberstein proper isn't mentioned in historical documents until much later, in 1277.
Gems continued to be found until not too long ago (the area contained rich deposits of Agates and Jasper); Oberstein has become a major gem and jewelry center, it is also home to an important diamond exchange.
Alas, in the 80's, the powers that be decided to build a highway over the Nahe River that runs through the valley betwen two of the several hills that comprise Oberstein; this highway is part of the famous "Deutsche Edelsteinstrasse" (the German Gem Road).

In warmer months it is also fun to visit the Cutting Mill (Weiherschleife) along the river on the north end of Idar.

After a heart-pumping climb of 230 stairs, you can continue up a path that leads through a beautiful beech forest to the ruins of Bosselstein tower, built in 1196, and the Oberstein Castle.

Idar-Oberstein is also well known for things other than gems.
Among the other attractions are the Church of the Rock, a small chapel built into the side of a mountain in the middle of Oberstein.
You may also visit the New and Old Castles located directly above the church as well as Frauenburg Castle just down the road.
