In the earliest Chinese ideography it appears as a sign for perfection and 10, the most perfect number.
In Western ideography the cross, and its graphic opposite, the circle, are the most common basic gestalts, and appear in many different Western ideographic systems.

He states, "Its first purpose, therefore, is to provide us with the most reliable test of the validity of a chain of inferences and to point out that every presupposition that tries to sneak in unnoticed, so that its origin can be investigated" (6).

 "Writing" by Edward Willett
The first forms of writing were pictography and ideography.
Ideography, or "idea writing," uses those pictures not just to represent the things themselves, but also associated ideas: for example, your drawing of the sun could also represent "warmth," and your drawing of the cow could also represent "milk" (or possibly "friend," depending on just how attached you are to your cow).
Pictography and ideography are forms of "limited writing." "Full writing" systems are those where the symbols represent spoken words and not objects.

Any person can understand the idea of such a drawing, whether or not he or she speaks the language of the person who drew it.
They did this by using signs that stood for the words in their language, not the ideas the words stood for.
To see how it works, take such a message as "The king killed a lion." In ideography, the message would include two drawings, one showing a man with the insignia of his office, such as a crown, holding a spear in his hand, and the other showing a lion.

The pasteboard is a familiar representation of all things educational; the gear is an accepted symbol for “action” or “work”; the equals sign needs no introduction; the hoe is my own suggestion for “cultivation”; and the man with a halo is obviously not too bad a guy.
Ideography may prove itself better suited to the ambiguities of human thought and intuition which the written word resists, precisely because ideographic interpretation is less determinate.
If ideography must get along on similar “training wheels” for a while, it is only following in the footsteps of other languages before it.

 Pierre Levy on dynamic ideography
In his book "L'idéographie dynamique" (The dynamic ideography) Pierre Lévy postulates the existence of a new language that would go beyond the distinction between text and image to provide a dynamic representation of thought models.
A second book entitled "Les arbres de connaissances" (Trees of Knowledge), co-authored with Michel Authier, develops an application of dynamic ideography in the field of forms of knowledge.
If a dynamic ideography were created, it would constitute a computer assisted imagination.

Indian Pictographs: Sioux Ojibway Pictography Ideography, Native American Petrographs, Picture-Writing North America
It is hoped that the following very brief treatise on the Pictographic writing of the American Indians, will excite interest in that branch of study by all boys and girls and others who are interested in anthropological research.
Petroglyphs and pictographs have been found and catalogued from the pyramids of Egypt to India, from Australia to Brazil, from Japan to Scotland, and in Mexico, and in many cases have handed down important traditional history of the times and peoples represented.
More distinctive examples of evolution in ideography and in other details of picture writing are found still extant among the Dakota (or Sioux) Indians, than among any other North American tribes.

 notes on: Frege's Begriffsschrift
In attempting "to ascertain how far one can proceed in arithmetic by means of inferences alone" Frege found language "to be an obstacle", which lead him "to the idea of the present ideography".
Having decided to forgo anything which is "without significance for the inferential sequence" Frege adopted the term "conceptual content" for the rest.
The ideography is to ordinary language as the microscope is to the human eye.

Begriffsschrift is not only the direct ancestor of contemporary systems of mathematical logic, but also the ancestor of all formal languages including computer programming languages.
Frege's reason for creating this "ideography" or "concept script" is essentially the reason behind creating formal verification systems; that is, he wanted to leave no gaps in his reasoning.
Its first purpose, therefore, is to provide us with the most reliable test of the validity of a chain of inferences and to point out every pre-supposition that tries to sneak in unnoticed, so that its origin can be investigated.
