  The Ideomotor Effect
The ideomotor effect is a theory that can provide a possible explanation for many paranormal phenomena such as dowsing and
There is no suggestion that the psychic is deliberately "faking it", the ideomotor effect is unconscious.
Similarly in the case of dowsing the suggestion is that the dowser knows via "normal" means (albeit unconsiously) the location of the target and via the ideomotor effect causes the dowsing rod to react accordingly.

The Ideomotor Effect: ideomotor action explained.
Ideomotor actions are unconscious, involuntary motor movements that are performed by a person because of prior expectations, suggestions or preconceptions.
The ideomotor effect has been known for over 150 years, yet it is still not a widely known phenomenon.
The ideomotor effect is just one example of why we should use objective, scientific testing rather than rely on subjective, personal experience to work out what is real and what is not.

 Ideomotor effect - SkepticWiki
The effect was first observed by William B. Carpenter in 1852, in his investigation of dowsing.
He proposed the Ideomotor effect as a third class of unconscious behavior, along with excitomotor (such as breathing and swallowing) and sensorimotor (reflex actions).
The Ideomotor effect has been well documented; however, it still remains an effect that is largely unknown to most people, including scientists.

 the ideomotor effect
The ideomotor effect refers to the influence of suggestion or expectaton on involuntary and unconscious motor behavior.
The term "ideomotor action" was coined by William B. Carpenter in 1852 in his explanation for the movements of rods and pendulums by dowsers, and some table turning or lifting by spirit mediums (the ones that weren't accomplished by cheating).
The movement of pointers on Ouija boards, of a facilitator's hands in facilitated communication, of hands and arms in applied kinesiology, and of some behaviors attributed to hypnotic suggestion, are due to ideomotor action.

The Ideomotor Effect is a theory proposed to explain phenomena such as Ouija Boards, Automatic Writting and Pendulum Dowsing.
The Ideomotor Effect occurs when a person subconsciously makes a movement of which he is unaware.
I would say that while the Ideomotor Effect might describe the mechanical mechanism of the physical movement, it still fails to completely explain the phenomena.

How People Are Fooled by Ideomotor Action
William James [5] elaborated upon Carpenter's ideas, asserting that ideomotor activity was the basic process underlying all volitional behavior: "Wherever a movement unhesitatingly and immediately follows upon the idea of it, we have ideomotor action.
Indeed, in the original seances using tables, the movements were caused not by ideomotor action but by various cheating methods employed by fraudulent mediums and their accomplices.
Although the effects of ideomotor action have been understood for at least 150 years, the phenomenon remains surprisingly unknown, even to scientists.

 Library, The Matter of Dowsing
Those who use stiff wires bent at right angles and held in each hand parallel to the ground, may say that the wires will cross one another when the sought-after object or substance is encountered; just as many say that the wires will diverge.
An indication of that is that a great number of scientists mostly physicists have embraced belief in dowsing, in spite of their superior knowledge of how the world works.
But this is an effect of the mind, a different matter from the workings of the common everyday objects and situations we encounter in our lives.

Angel Drawings Research: A scientific case study of ideomotor effect.
In 2001, Belarussian psychologist dr. Vladimir Sivitsky PhD (you see him standing next to a statue of Zoroaster in Kiev), invited me to be part of his scientific research of ideomotorics and match it with my experience of automatic writing and Angel drawings.
The idea was to discuss and lecture about ideomotor effect, viewed against the perspective of my work as an ideomotor artist and an exhibition of Angel drawings.
June 2003, the fruit of our research and cooperation was dr. Sivitsky’s first book (officially a book for students of psychology) about ideomotor effect, entitled ‘familiar stranger’.
