Lots of numbers, no great graphics, etc. But the credibility with which they presented, and their ability to answer any question directly, honestly, non-defensively, and sometimes with "I don't know," set the tone for the subtle signs of acceptance by the audience.
That would explain why we are sometimes OK with Chris being late, a brilliant developer, but not as tolerant of Pat coming in late, if Pat is barely contributing to the work group.

Then it is plainly to be seen that chronic and acute idiosyncrasies are present in the subject, and instead of a fault to be regretted in a patient, should be studied comprehensively in its relation to its expressions, viz., symptomatology.
We are not baffled but encouraged by the existence of this so-called idiosyncrasy, as by finding it we have gained a strong hold, in the way of information, upon the constitution of our patient.

Christine Ammer, in her "Have A Nice Day -- No Problem," a dictionary of cliches, agrees that the phrase probably dates to the early 20th century, and notes that the alliteration of "hell" and "handbasket" probably contributed to the popularity of the saying.
Incidentally, "idiosyncrasy" is one of those rare English words whose modern sense corresponds almost precisely to the combined meanings of its ancient roots.
Language almost never operates in such an orderly fashion, and it is far more common to find that the roots of a word bear only a tangential logical relation to its current meaning.
