Topic: Idiotarian

Idiotarian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term idiotarian was coined by Charles Johnson (webmaster of the conservative Little Green Footballs warblog) on January 5, 2002, in response to a comment on the weblog Instapundit.
To some extent, alleged "idiotarians" on both sides of the ideological spectrum are perceived by fans of the term as unfriendly to personal or ideological liberty and reliant on repetitive dogma rather than reason.
While "Idiotarian" is often employed as a synonym for "anti-American," fans of the term have also increasingly begun using it as a synonym for "anti-Semitic" or as a characterization of Holocaust deniers.

Why We Use the Word ‘Idiotarian’
Likewise, idiotarianism usually involves, say, moral relativism, yet there are moral relativists who are anti-idiotarians, and there are people who believe in right and wrong but think that idiotarian policies are the morally right ones.
Put more succinctly, idiotarianism is a rationalisation of a pathological identification with people whose own bad values are the cause of their misfortune.
Personally, I like "Idiotarian", at least as an internal shorthand - the fact that it's inherently insulting is a plus, not a minus - but I agree that it's not precise as a general use term that's intrinsically understandable by the casual reader.

Background on the Anti-Idiotarian Manifesto   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
It seemed to me that I detected a number of recurring themes and stances in that debate, an emerging consensus, that could not adequately be subsumed within conventional political categories; not least because one of those themes was the extent to which the institutions and sages of conventional politics have failed us.
Symbolic of all this was the invention of the term "idiotarian" and its rapid propagation through the blogosphere.
Previous definitions of `idiotarianism' have been implicit and extensional, requiring the reader/hearer to construct a model from examples.

The trouble with "idiotarianism" is that it's used just like the drunk uses the lamppost: more for propping up one's position, than for the illumination it provides.
The problem I have with keeping the word "idiotarian" (even though I think it's the right word to use) is the fact that the left is notorious for redefining words to suit themselves.
