	Idle Race
		The lack of chart success for the Idle Race despite critical acclaim remains a mystery, especially as the band were no strangers to radio and TV appearances.
		A music press article on the Idle Race in 1969 quoted Jeff Lynne as being disillusioned about the bands' lack of chart success and this was further reinforced by the poor sales of the Idle Race's second self-titled album released in November of 1969 on which Lynne himself had handled the production.
		The other members of Idle Race were naturally disappointed with Lynne's decision but decided to carry on with replacements Mike Hopkins, formerly of the Diplomats and The Lemon Tree, on guitar/vocals and Dave Walker from The Redcaps on vocals & harmonica.

		If you are idling around the track, then I don't think carbon build-up and top end power loss are too much of a concern to you.
		When someone's bike won't idle, and they tell you "it performs better that way", or "it prevents carbon buildup and spooge", what they are really telling you is "I don't know how to jet properly to get it to idle cleanly".

		The Idle Race seem to have been consigned to a strange, forgotten corner of UK psych, which is doubly odd as they were not only a perfectly good band, but also the first recording home of future ELO man Jeff Lynne.
		Their debut effort, The Birthday Party, is a really rather good little typical psych-pop album, with all the period detail you could ask for, married to an excellent selection of songs.
		Incidentally, the Idle Race's entire recorded output is available on a double CD set, Back to the Story (***½), which is almost certainly the easiest way to track this material down.

		This is a handy collection of some of the earliest recorded works by my favorite performer/songwriter in all of rock 'n' roll, Jeff Lynne of ELO fame.
		Even in the late 60's tunes he wrote for his band Idle Race, it's easy to hear the Lennon/McCartney influences - actually no so much easy to hear them, but impossible to miss them.
		Still, while much of the Move and ELO music on this album can be heard elsewhere (and, indeed, are reviewed elsewhere here), the Idle Race songs are truly well-crafted for their time, and considering that Lynne was just venturing into songwriting.
