The ingredients of Idomeneo's success in Sussex were the devotion of conductor Fritz Busch, a great cast (including Sena Jurinac, Richard Lewis, Léopold Simoneau and Birgit Nilsson) and, of course, a glorious score which had been, at that time, unheard and unstaged.
Sellars, in his usual fashion, updated the opera to the present: in rough terms, Idomeneo became George W. Bush, his confidant Arbace was Donald Rumsfeld, the Greeks were American GIs and the Trojan women wore burqas, presumably as citizens of a recently defeated Islamic state.
But rather than translating the emotions and themes of Idomeneo into modern times, as he has done brilliantly in his best work, Sellars chose simply to underline any bits of the text that could be construed to have "relevance" to current world events.

Variety.com - Deutsche Oper cancels 'Idomeneo'
In the final act of director Hans Neuenfels' controversial version, which was to premiere Nov. 5 at the Deutsche Oper, Idomeneo carries the heads of Poseidon, Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed onstage in a show of defiance and revolt against the tyranny of the gods and their demands for sacrifice.
Harms, who has not ruled out staging "Idomeneo" at a later date, said her decision to cancel the production may now offer the chance for a much needed discourse on understanding between Islam and Christianity.
The opera controversy topped the agenda at a summit between German government officials and Muslim leaders held in Berlin on Sept. 27 to launch a two-year campaign to improve the integration of the country's 3 million Muslims.

Now Showing in Berlin: Muhammad Beheaded - The Lede - Breaking News - New York Times Blog
Fearing a reaction similar to the violent protests that followed the publication of editorial cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper last year, the Deutsche Opera in Berlin is installing airport-style scanners and otherwise girding for a possible backlash as it prepares to stage a modern interpretation of Mozart’s “Idomeneo”.
Whether this interpretation of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” is faithful to it’s composer’s intent is irrelevant to the issue at hand.
Idomeneo is set more than a millenium before Jesus and Mohammed, so the alteration is anachronistic, but more importantly, pointless.

Opera -- in its original form -- has nothing offensive in it   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Mozart's "Idomeneo," the work at the center of the blowup, has nothing to do with Islam, nothing to do with Muhammad and very little to do with severed heads.
It's a heroic drama set in ancient Crete in the aftermath of the Trojan War, and it focuses on Idomeneo's fateful oath to reward the gods by sacrificing the first person he encounters on reaching home (Bible readers will recognize this as a cousin to the story of Jephtha from the Book of Judges).
Still, "Idomeneo" is a peculiar flashpoint for this kind of controversy, because it requires an interventionist stage director before it can give offense.
