The Idrija Municipal Museum was founded in 1953 as the museum of Idrija and Cerkno regions, which lie on the borderline between the Karst and the pre-Alpine regions.
Since 1953 the museum has been housed in the Idrija Castle, which dominates the old centre of the town and has preserved its historical name Gewerkenegg, namely, the castle had been mostly a seat of the management and administration of the mercury mine.

Mercury in Idrija comes in two guises: as cinnabar (mercury sulphide, HgS) rock inclusions, and as pure mercury, referred to as 'native' mercury.
