  Idumaea - LoveToKnow 1911
IDUMAEA ('160v saia), the Greek equivalent of Edom (aip), a territory which, in the works of the Biblical writers, is considered to lie S.E. of the Dead Sea, between the land of Moab and the Gulf of Akaba.
Josephus used the name Idumaea as including not only Gobalitis, the original Mount Seir, but also Amalekitis, the land of Amalek, west of this, and Akrabatine, the ancient Acrabbim,, S.W. of the Dead Sea.
Ptolemy's account presents us with the last stage, in which the name Idumaea is entirely restricted to the cis-Jordanic district, and the old trans-Jordanic region is absorbed in Arabia.

It was as Idumaea, the Greek form of Edom, that the region was included in the territory of Roman-occupied Judaea.
Idumaea achieved supremacy in Jewish affairs with the rise of Antipater of Idumaea in the middle of the 1st century
His successor was Agrippa I, whose administration became unpopular, owing to his reputation and to the continued unwillingness of the Jewish people to accept the family of Antipater.

The borders of Idumaea are difficult to define with precision but were generally speaking Emek (Vale of) HaElah in the north extending south towards Keilah and then southeast of Beth Zur.
Idumaea's southern frontier extended as far south as the Beersheva Valley.
That is to say, while no distinctly Idumaean seals or coins have been found, those of Yehud have been found and their provenance, in conjunction with the Biblical material, allows us to tentatively define that border.

Ruled by King David Maccabeus of Judea, Judea is sandwiched along the Palestinian coast, between Idumaea, Nabataea, Roman Syria and Egypt.
The recent takeover of Idumaea by King David has expanded the borders of the country beyond the River Jordan, thereby removing one of the threats against his kingdom and strengthening his own power at the same time.
Recently ruled by King Antipater, Idumaea with its capital at Bostra, has been recently conquered by Judea, with King Antipater going into exile in Egypt and his eldest son Crown Prince Herod disappearing into the Nabatean wilderness to raise a resistance army.
