Ie island is the setting of a traditional Okinawan drama where a sad girl by the name of Hando-gwaa who fell in love with a man named Kanahi, Ie-shima's headman.
There is a monument dedicated to his memory in a coral cave on a beach on the southern coast of the island.

 Chapter VII: The Capture of Ie Shima
For five days after Ie Shima was declared secure, elements of the 77th mopped up remaining groups of the enemy, sealed caves, destroyed pillboxes, marked or removed the thousands of mines that were still on the island, and buried the dead.
According to the division surgeon, "casualties on Ie Shima were unusually severe, many of them compound fractures of the extremities and penetrating head wounds caused by small-arms fire." Out of 944 cases, he reported, 412 wounds had been caused by small-arms fire, 511 by shell fragments, and 21 by other causes.
As expected, Ie Shima proved to be an ideal base for the support of operations on Okinawa and for preparing later attacks on the Japanese homeland.

While on Ie Shima, Pyle and the regimental commander were on their way to the front when the road was raked by machine-gun bullets.
This marker was replaced by the soldiers on Ie Shima with a granite monument they bought that bears the same inscription.

IE SHIMA — A group of Marines recently lived up to the Corps’ claim it is a 9-1-1 readiness force.
Several Marines from Operation Support Detachment Ie Shima responded to a late-night call to douse a fire in a tourist area park on the island.
“Ie Village has only two firetrucks and they were not enough to put out the fire that night,” said Tadashi Nishie, of Ie Village’s Fire Prevention Department.

It was the day the U.S. invaded the tiny island of Ie Shima, just off the upper western side of Okinawa.
The Army's 77th Infantry Division was among those that landed on Ie Shima, each with their own mission to take down the tiny island.
Pyle was buried in the 77th Division's cemetery on Ie Shima under a crude marker, which the Division later replaced with the current monument standing there.

Keise Shima (eleven miles southwest of the Hagushi Beaches) was secured by an unopposed landing of the 2/306 on 31 March.
To the south of 'The Pinnacle' was Ie Town (most of the buildings being of stone construction and substantially fortified) and to the west in the centre of the island were three airstrips between 6 and 7,000 feet in length, in the shape of 'XI'.
The entire population of Ie Shima was removed from the island so as not to interfere with the construction work on the airfields.

Ie Jima Auxiliary Airfield, which occupies one third of the island, is where military training exercises are conducted such as Harrier aircraft take-off and landing exercises, and parachute drop training.

I received several long phone calls from local people who had served on the IE Shima or on Navy ships near by.
By the way, the article implied that the aircrafts on IE Shima were all B-17's and PBY's.

Saddest: When I read the bulletin while in line at the mess hall on Ie Shima that more than 100,000 people had been killed with an atomic bomb at Hiroshima, Japan.
I was on foriegn soil (New Guinea, Luzon, Ie Shima and Japan) for only a year.
I was in one feeble air raid when a lone Jap Betty dropped some bombs on a line of P51's the night we docked off Ie Shima.

No one was injured in that incident, but it frightened island residents and prompted the Ie Shima Town Council to pass a resolution demanding the cessation of all airdrop missions.

Wajii my favorite second dive is just about 2000 yards south of Ohoba and is also on the western coast of Ie Shima.

We got to Ie Shima and started to set up our isolation area.
Ie Shima is famous for only one thing, it's where the GI's best friend, Ernie Pyle was killed near the end of WWII.
