Harris leaves Wales out of pocket | Rugby union | Guardian Unlimited Sport
The Wales centre Iestyn Harris is returning to rugby league after opting out of the last year of his contract with Cardiff Blues.
Harris leaves as a free agent, much to the disgust of David Moffett, the Welsh Rugby Union chief executive who was not in office when the 27-year-old was signed from Leeds Rhinos in September 2001.
Harris had a clause in his contract that allowed him to return to rugby league if he was not chosen for Wales's tour to Argentina and South Africa this summer.

As Harris was signed for a deal worth over £1m in the summer, it was a blessing in disguise that he came with a wrist injury suffered in his last game of Run and Wriggle.
Defences are frightened of Harris and often double defend on him, making space out wide as was shown in the beautiful try he created (along with Nicky Robinson) against Newport.
Next season will be Iestyn’s season at club level where he is guaranteed a fair share of possession, but is the step up to international level a further season away.

However, it is balance of an altogether different kind that has made Iestyn Harris a celebrated figure in the worlds of rugby league and rugby union, that and a refreshingly unassuming and selfless manner for a player who has become the perfect role model for youngsters from Tiger Bay to Todmorden.
Harris could never live up to that unrealistic expectation but during his time in the valleys he did enough to impress Welsh legends such as Barry John, Phil Bennett, David Watkins and Jonathan Davies, all of whom were gushing in their praise for the Oldham-born star.
The ongoing struggles of rugby union in Wales made Harris a soft target for some within the game, especially at a time when the WRU were strapped for cash and clubs were being allowed to go to the wall, and a player who has always valued his privacy soon realised his future lay in league.

However, far from being an instant success, Harris struggled with the complexities of the new game and coaches were unable to determine his best position, leading to reports that the 27-year-old might be considering a switch back to league after the World Cup.
Harris himself said in July he was not interested in returning to league, as he still had much to prove, particularly after questions among fans that the reported 1.5 million pounds ($2.5 million) paid for his services could have been better spent elsewhere.
Harris repaid his coach's faith and produced probably his best game for the national side, kicking five penalties and impressing with his tactical kicking, defensive work and attempts to spark his backline.
