Funk   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Funk is a distinct style of music originated by African-Americans, e.g., James Brown and his band members (especially Maceo and Melvin Parker), and groups like The Meters.
As late as the 1950s and early 1960s, when "funk" and "funky" were used increasingly in the context of soul music, the terms still were considered indelicate and inappropriate for use in polite company.
Funk music was exported to Africa in the mid to late 1960s, and melded with African singing and rhythms to form Afrobeat.

Funk's effort was good enough for a $1,440,000 check and some sparkling Waterford crystal.

Funk is a vigorous African American style of music developed mainly by James Brown and his band members (especially Maceo and Melvin Parker) on the one hand and groups like The Meters on the other hand.
Funk can be best recognized by syncopated rhythm, thick bass line (often based on "on one" beat), razor-sharp rhythm guitars, yowlish vocals (as that of Cameo or Bar-Kays), strong rhythm-oriented brass section, percussion instruments, happiness in style, African tones, dance floor audience, and strong jazzy influences (e.g.

If you were to do a bit of nightlife time travel and land in Washington about 20 years ago for some club hopping, chances are good you'd run into Catfish Hodge, the workaholic bluesman who could be heard regularly at places like Desperados, Mr.
This week, Hodge unveils his latest group effort, the Hillbilly Funk Allstars, another collaboration with some guys from the Feat (drummer Richie Hayward and bassist Kenny Gradney) along with country/jazz fiddle whiz Vassar Clements and Dixie Dregs/Jazz Is Dead keyboardist T Lavitz.
If the Hillbilly Funk Allstars show some longevity, they're likely to end up in the next edition of "Jam Bands: America's Hottest Live Groups," a 300-page volume by Massachusetts-based writer Dean Budnick.

If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album.

If those three names aren't enough to prick up your ears for this one -- one drop of the needle should be enough, as the record's a real winner all the way through, filled with well-written songs, and a mixture of soul jazz, funky fusion, and vocal tracks that really wrok great together.
The album's got a smooth and slinky finish that has the band tightening up a lot from their Westbound years -- going for a compressed spacey soul sound on some of the album's mellower numbers, in a style that's equally as mindblowing as their heavier funk.
The band's rawer style has been firmed up and economized -- but a lot of the best elements are still in place, including a strange approach to vocals that has male and female voices interacting and counterbalancing in a similar style to that heard on some of Roy Ayers' best work from the early 70s.

Funk is an untidy quarrel of history, musicology and hearsay that certifies the cultural heritage of a Hip Hop nation.
Worst of all, Vincent's writing style borders on unreadable: the sentence "It would be a measure of any hip fl act in the seventies to come with a funk bomb to get respect" is, unfortunately, typical.
FUNK is a breathless exploration of the roots of a musical form that has never been given its due respect, is often mis-classified, and has been written off as a gimmicky side-show to "serious" music for too long.

itting in a Baton Rouge bar late one night in 1973, the three guys in Grand Funk Railroad, at the time America's most popular and despised (by nonfans and critics) group, were lapping up the suds with the boys from Humble Pie, a voguish blues-boogie group featuring Steve Marriott (Peter Frampton had already departed).
Neither group's career had long to run but they were young and full of themselves, and the future undoubtedly seemed a long way off.
The group shortly got together with producer Todd Rundgren (who was working with them for two reasons -- Capitol had begun selling Grand Funk records more slowly than the one every four seconds of their peak and they needed his artistic credibility).
