Igala is a language of the Yoruboid branch of Defoid, itself a branch of the Benue-Congo language family, spoken by the Igala ethnic group of Nigeria.
In 1989, an estimated 800,000 spoke Igala, primarily in Kogi State and Edo State.
The Agatu, Idoma, and Bassa people use Igala for primary school.

Yoruboid is a group of languages comprised of Igala, a language spoken in central Nigeria, and the Edekiri group, the members of which are spoken in a band across Togo, Benin and southwestern Nigeria.
Another well-known Yoruboid language is Itsekiri (Nigeria, 500,000 speakers).
The Yoruboid group is a branch of Defoid, which itself is a branch of the Benue-Congo subfamily of the Niger-Congo language family.

IGALA 3 continues the biennial conference series sponsored by IGALA, the International Gender and Language Association, launched in May 2000 at Stanford University in California and continued in March 2002 at Lancaster University in England.
The IGALA conferences themselves grew out of the conferences organized at the Linguistics Department of the University of California at Berkeley in the 1980s and 1990s by the Berkeley Women and Language Group.
IGALA has also collaborated with COSWL, the Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics of the Linguistic Society of America, on a conference July 19-20, 2003 in conjunction with the LSA Linguistic Institute at East Lansing, Michigan.

The masquerades, their context, and the languages associated with them suggest a continuum of age-grade masking traditions from the east bank to the west bank of the Niger, and indicate greater complexity in the cultural background of the Ekperi and their neighbors than the orthodox history allows.
The Igala capital at Idah faces the northern Edo settlement of Agenebode (Uwepa-Uwano) on the opposite bank, and what is now the Ekperi area is said to mark a point on the border between Edo and Igala authority prior to the Idah war of 1515 (Eboreime 1978:2).
Until further research is carried out among the Igala, in Ibaji (the Igbo-Igala borderland), and among the northern Edo, we will be unable to do more than suggest that the northern Edo of Ekperi have drawn heavily upon the cultures of neighboring Igbo and Igala to augment a heritage from the Benin kingdom.

By focussing on a community of lesbian women, I intend to conduct an investigation of how their language use on a local level is constrained by wider ideologies of sex, gender, and sexuality.
In very recent times, studies into language and sexuality have developed out of language and gender studies, and there is now a growing awareness that in the same way as gender roles are assigned from early childhood socialisation, so are concepts of normative sexual identity, namely an expected attraction to the opposite sex (heteronormativity).
At undergraduate level, I was interested in the area of language and sexuality, and completed my BA dissertation (a sociolinguistic analysis of gay male usage of ideologically 'feminine' linguistic practices) within the Department of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Sheffield.

In keeping with the theme of the Institute, there will be a number of special courses in neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and the cognitive foundations of language on the one hand and in sociolinguistics, language variation, and language in culture and society on the other.
