Nigerian music also utilizes ostinato rhythms, in which a rhythmic pattern is repeated, and variable metres which change the time signature of a piece of music.
Traditional music from Nigeria is almost always functional; that is, performed to mark a ritual such as a wedding or funeral, and not for pure entertainment or artistic enjoyment.
The most common format for music in Nigeria is a call-and-response choir, in which a lead singer and a chorus interchange verses, sometimes accompanied by instruments which either shadow the lead text or repeat and ostinato vocal phrase.

Similar to the piano music written by Ayo Bankole, who also studied at the Guildhall from 1957 to 1961; Uzoigwe's piano music at Guildhall shows the influence of the various styles he was exposed to.
His intention was to develop a general theory of African music, based on an orderly and systematic analysis of the structure of music and its meaning to both performers and audiences.
In the process, Uzoigwe proposed that music is a social fact and the organization of tones is the result of decision making by the resultant shape created by the musicians' molding of their musical conceptions in conformity to the social-event structure with which the music and/or musical performance is associated.

As one of the earlier “world music” performers to reach the global stage, Nigeria’s most famous juju musician has enjoyed a long career on these shores.

Though the Yoruba and Igbo fought civil wars in the past, they both share a strong reputation for their contributions to traditional and popular culture in Nigeria and maintain strong traditions of praise singing.

The complex rhythmic interplay and inherent structural and aesthetic underpinnings of Yoruba and Igbo music are a big part of the reason why Nigerian Highlife and Juju were able to blend so perfectly with “imported” funk grooves in the 1960s and ’70s.
Afro Baby, a welcome collection of material from this era, provides not only pure listening pleasure, but some illumination of musical history: the selection of music here could serve as an essay and evidence attesting to the truth that there was much more to the West African soul/funk movement than Fela’s Afro-beat.
Indeed, one of the great thrills to be gained from immersion in the classic era of African pop is the chance to experience a plethora of approaches and stylistic blends, each as original, viable, and fully-realized as the other, yet still rooted in the essence and energy of African traditional music.
