Ightham Mote (pronounced like "item moat") is a medieval moated manor house close to the village of Ightham, near Sevenoaks in Kent.
Originally dating to around 1320, the building is of note as its successive owners effected relatively few changes to the main structure for the 650 years it was occupied.
Ightham Mote and its gardens are open to the public.

The village of Ightham is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, compiled for William the Conqueror in 1086, but the origin of its name suggests that it already existed half a millennium earlier.
One of the most fascinating discoveries at Ightham Mote was the large number of hidden shoes found in spaces under floorboards, in chimneys and elsewhere.
The house and garden at Ightham Mote are open from early spring to late autumn (18 March to 30 October 2005), from 10.30am to 5.30pm.

Here at Ightham, it happens that the alterations, extensions and repairs tended to be sympathetic rather than in the latest style.
However, the glory of the chapel is its early sixteenth century painted ceiling with similar motifs to the stained glass window in the Great Hall, and therefore the work of Richard Clement.
As some of the boards have been altered to fit the ceiling, it may be that the boards were decorated for another purpose and brought to Ightham by Richard.

A Listed Grade 1 building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, medieval in appearance, constructed largely of oak timbers and local ragstone has had a succession of owners through the centuries.
These include Sir Richard Clement, a courtier of Henry VIII, the Selbys - who lived in Ightham Mote for almost 300 years, and Sir Richard Colyer-Fergusson, who resided here from 1889 until 1951.
