Ignacio Ramonet: Cuba has an influence as never before in Latin America   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Ramonet talked to a large group of students at the University of Computer Science (Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, UCI, in Spanish), on the periphery of this capital city, where the Cuban edition of his most recent book, “Cien horas con Fidel” (One hundred hours with Fidel) was launched.
Ramonet revealed that after attending the 2002 World Social Forum in Brazil, he expressed his concern to Fidel Castro because the new generations opposing neo-liberal globalization did not feel the solidarity towards this country that his generation did.
Ramonet said that the book is dedicated to the new generation of young people “who have not had the opportunity to know the thinking” of the Cuban leader which — in his opinion - is distorted by the mass communication media.

Ramonet attributed the trend to the failure of US imposed neo-liberal policies that has widened the gap between rich and poor and led to increased social and economic decay.
Ramonet singled out special praise for the virtual elimination of illiteracy under Chavez and the reclaiming of land for the poor, much of which is still owned by oligarchies and English Lords.
Ramonet said, “People say that Chavez is a megalomaniac just because he talks with the public on TV for four hours on his show Allo Presidente.

Al-Ahram Weekly | Books Supplement | Iraq: Views from Paris
Ignacio Ramonet is editor of the French newspaper Le Monde diplomatique, and his essay, Irak: Histoire d'un désastre, a reconstruction of events leading up to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, presents a negative analysis of US policy that will be familiar to readers of this influential political monthly.
Ramonet devotes a section of the book to what he calls the "manipulation and propaganda" put out by the US administration both before and after the invasion of Iraq, of which the association made between al-Qaida and the Saddam regime is one example.
Ramonet's conclusion is that the US now wishes to play a selfish role in the world, at odds with its own best traditions.

IPS- Porto Alegre 2002 - 'With the truth, we shall overcome'
Ignacio Ramonet, editor of Le Monde Diplomatique, proposed an 'ecology of communications' for confronting the contamination of the media by the globalising powers, which through the force of repetition often turn the truth into lies, and lies into truth.
Ramonet, a panellist at the WSF seminar on 'Democratising Communications and the Media', said yesterday that counter-information from independent sources and civil society contributes towards 'decontamination', but that it must be rigorous and precise in order to avoid falling into the same manipulation of the news as 'the Establishment'.
Ramonet and Savio shared Sunday's panel with Joelie Palmiere, of the international feminist press agency, Les Pénélopes, based in France, Bolívar Osvaldo León, of the Agencia Latinoamericana de Información, in Ecuador, and Jeff Cohen, of the US-based Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting.

 Foreign Policy: Letters
Ignacio Ramonet is right that public protests haven’t erupted in Cuba since Fidel Castro handed power to his brother last year (“Was Fidel Good for Cuba?” January/ February 2007).
It would be more appropriate for Ramonet to “stop looking at Cuba through an ideological prism and twisting the facts to fit in with a preconceived scheme of things,” as he himself writes in reference to Montaner’s well-informed and reasoned analyses.
Ignacio Ramonet replies: Although I generally respect the work of Human Rights Watch, I disagree with Vivanco and Wilkinson when they assert that there haven’t been public protests in Cuba since the summer because of “Castro’s repressive machinery.” They are seriously mistaken.

Borges - Papers: "Library of Babel on the Internet"
To return to Ramonet’s argument, it may certainly appear a seductive prospect to push the notion of contemporary relevance further and interpret Borges’ Library of Babel as some kind of prefigurement of the Internet.
In other words, the great majority of the books are completely useless, and statistically it would be a remarkable feat to find even one “real”, actually readable book in months searching the shelves – and even then, the chances of its content being of any use or interest to the seeker would be minimal.
To return finally to Ramonet’s critique, it may be added that some today feel we are living in a time when mainstream media increasingly push the message of “pensée unique” (“single thought”), of one-dimensional goodthink and sanitised, centrally-approved orthodoxies.

As a result of this, there is an ever greater need to be better informed and to study the course of events, and to transmit and improve ideas.
Highlighting the incisiveness of a phrase by Ramonet, where he writes that the empire "rules better if those being ruled are unaware of it," Fidel confirmed his confidence that through the battle of ideas, "dominated people will become aware" of their subjection and that a "new world" would emerge from the system’s crisis.
In the midst of the imperialist euphoria accompanying the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ramonet published "Communication, Victim of the Marketplace," an essay demystifying the alleged objectivity of information; the text also denounced the mass media’s entanglement with the most spurious oligarchic interests.

Felix Stalder: Ramonet's Geopolitics of Chaos (Review)
The intellectual crisis is manifest in the hegemony of what Ramonet calls "la pensée unique", a phrase inadequately translated as "politically correct thinking".
But the most problematic aspects is that Ramonet seem entrenched in a backwards nostalgia of strong but rational and benevolent state institutions upholding purified national cultures, moral values and the utopia of prosperity for everyone.
All this is waning and is being replaced, according to Ramonet, by chaos and desperation.
