  Ignatius Krasicki
Ignatius Krasicki (also Ignacy Krasicki) (1735 - 1801) was born at the San River into a family that held the noble rank of Counts of the Holy Roman Empire.
For this he received great reprimands, for having written for a Protestant king, and was told as a Catholic and as a Pole, he made a great blunder; he could not be the friend to the Prussian king.
In 1794 Krasicki was elevated to archbishop of Gnesen in Prussia.

Krasicki wrote an epic on the war of Khotin—the same as had furnished the subject of the poem of Potocki, of which Krasicki in all probability had never heard, and also that of the Dalmatian Gundulich.
Krasicki's poem is at best but a dull affair, in fact a pale copy of a poor original, the Henriade of Voltaire.
The existence of so many ecclesiastical writers was a natural feature in Polish literature; they formed the only really cultured class in the community, which consisted besides of a haughty ignorant nobility living among their serfs, and (at a vast distance) those serfs themselves, in a brutalized condition.

 Polish Literature
The contemporary poets, Krasicki and Tremlicki especially, were men of their time, sober, sensible, humourous, witty, aiming at perfection of language and clearness of style; what they produced was not unworthy of an enlightened nation, but in no wise truly great work.
Kniaznin, however, and Karpinski have left us productions more lyrical in tone, in which scenes of peasant life, together with religious sentiments, are often to be found.
No wonder that their achievement, the Constitution of the Third of May, was proclaimed by Burke and Sièyés the best in Europe.

 The Three Partitions
It was due to his inspiration that Bishop Adam Naruszewicz undertook his celebrated critical "History of the Polish Nation." The "prince of poets," Bishop Ignatius Krasicki, was another member of the King's circle, to which also belonged the poet Stanislav Trembecki.
Among the other cultural achievements of that time was the establishment of the first national theatre, which saw such a brilliant development under the leadership of Woyciech Boguslawski, and the founding of the periodic literary magazines.
The Czartoryskis favored the reform party, as it was the only element in the country that openly championed freedom from Russian tutelage, whose dupes they had been and on account of which Polish state sovereignty had practically ceased to exist.
