Europe East and West: the Seipel Line
Ignaz Seipel (1876-1932) was an Austrian churchman, political scientist and statesman who in the 1920s served two terms as chancellor of the newly formed Austrian republic.
I have referred to the Seipel Line – and to the east-west dichotomy that it represents – in two previous essays, dealing with the consequences of the “wrong” concept of nation on either side of the line.
But in neither essay do I actually demarcate the line geographically, and Seipel himself doesn’t seem to have done that either, except that he considered the German nation (to which he regarded himself and all German-speaking Austrians as belonging) to be squarely on the eastern side of the line.

 Interwar Austria
During the 1920s and early 1930s, the CSP was dominated by Ignaz Seipel, a priest and theologian who had served in the last imperial ministry.
But because CSP leader Seipel was given to similarly strong rhetoric, the two contributed to the polarization of Austrian society.
Seipel tried to form an antisocialist coalition with the Nationals, but that party was not yet prepared to set aside its own ideological differences with the CSP.

In 1922 Ignaz Seipel became Chancellor of Austria.
Seipel, a Roman Catholic priest, honest and conscientious but naive about finance, was not the usual politician.
Mises, by then a government adviser, and Wilhelm Rosenberg, a lawyer friend who was an expert in financial questions, convinced Seipel that for the good of the people the printing of superfluous banknotes should be stopped.

This reckless, blustering young aristocrat is one of the closest friends of Aus-trian-born Adolf Hitler, Fascist bogyman of Germany.
That Monsignor Seipel and all he stands for should want Prince von Starhemberg to be Minister of Interior is a fact with the pregnancy of dynamite.

As vice chancellor and foreign minister (1930–32) he promoted the customs-union pact with Germany, a project that failed because of French opposition.

After 1918 First Republic Catholic leaders such as Theodor Innitzer and Ignaz Seipel took leading positions within or close to the Austrian Government and increased their influence during the time of the Austrofascism—Catholicism was treated much like a state religion by dictators Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg.
Although Catholic leaders welcomed the Germans in 1938 during the Anschluss of Austria into Germany, Austrian Catholicism stopped its support of Nazism later on and many former religious public figures became involved with the resistance during the Third Reich.
