I believe Giunti's new wife was in the grandstands opposite and witnessed the tragic accident.
Possibly Giunti assumed Beltoise was still at the side of the track and had not allowed for him pushing the car across the track to the pits.
Giunti could have expected JPB's car could have been moving close to the right side, NEVER cutting the race line after the apex of that turn, which btw was an almost blind turn that could be taken flat out in 4th gear.

My uncle took some wonderful pics of Ignazio in action and at the boxes at 1000 Km di Monza in the late 60s...shame I don't have a scanner.
In 1971, prior to Giunti's death, Ferrari were already commited to Regga, Ickx and Andretti.
Unfortunately, at that moment Ignazio Giunti, who was leading the race in a Ferrari 312P, was about to lap another car, both of which had already lapped the Matra twice, as it strungled pushing the car to the edge of the road, so they didn't have much noticed the flags, and were driving quite hard.

The Targa Florio was another Porsche benefit: as the Sicilian roads were not very suitable for the big 5 litre cars, Porsche fielded the 908.03 spyders, the ideal mount for the narrow and winding Sicilian track.
Another 1-2 for Porsche, after Ignazio Giunti in the sole 512 S had to give in to the flying Leo Kinnunen during the last lap of the Sicilian classic.
At the end of the first lap Pedro Rodriguez leads by 14 seconds (!) from Ignazio Giunti in the Ferrari, who made a very good start and proves to be very difficult to overtake.

Like his unfortunate countryman Ignazio Giunti, Giovanni Galli was a steady performer in Ferrari's sportscar team of the late sixties, using his nickname 'Nanni' to confuse his family, which disapproved of his racing career.
Just as it happened with triple World Champion Nelson Soutomayor, adopting his mother's last name to avoid the wrath of his father and to escape life as a mediocre tennis player, the nickname stuck.
While Giunti pulled the shortest straw after just four races for Ferrari in 1970, being dumped in favour of the young Regazzoni, Galli was drafted in from the sportscar squad to replace the indisposed Rega at the 1972 Austrian GP.
