In Austria, aviation pioneers Wilhelm Kress and Igo Etrich had a marked influence on early aviation history during the last part of the 19th century by flying balloons and airships.
Igo Etrich looked for objects in nature that flew easily and used his findings to design a wing shape that would provide inherent stability to planes.
The “Etrich II” - a recognisable aeroplane which Etrich called the “Taube” (dove) because of its bird-like wings and tail - was built in the winter of 1909/10 based on experiences with the “Etrich I”.

Being the Germans\' first practical military plane, it was used for all common military aircraft applications, including as a fighter, bomber, surveillance plane and trainer from its first flight in 1910 until the beginning of World War I. Due to the rapid advancement of aviation during the war, the design was obsolete by 1914.
The plane was developed by Igo Etrich from Austria in 1909, with the first flight in 1910, and was called the Etrich Taube.
While Etrich had tried to build a flying wing aircraft based on the Zanonia wing shape, the conventional Taube was much more successful.

The Taube: A Stealth: WWI German observation airplane
The Austrian engineer Igo Etrich designed and flew his first tractor monoplane on 20 July 1909, and the first Taube prototype in July 1910.
Those built from 1911 onward reflected a host of dimensional and other variations, but the 2-seat military version produced by Rumpler in 1912 was the most widespread and may be taken as typical.
Etrich had relinquished his copyright in the design, following a dispute with Rumpler, and this left the way clear for Tauben for various types to be built in Germany by the A]batros, DFW, Gotha, Halberstadt, Jeannin, Kondor, Krieger, LVG, LilbeckTravemuinde and Rumpler factories.

In this instance the process of elimination created considerable surprise, inasmuch as it involved an embargo on the use of certain machines, which under peace conditions had achieved an international reputation, and were held to represent the finest expression of aeronautical science in France as far as aeroplane developments are concerned.
Possibly the German machine which is most familiar, by name, to the general public is the Taube, or, as it is sometimes called, the Etrich monoplane, from the circumstance that it was evolved by the Austrian engineer Igo Etrich in collaboration with his colleague Wels.
The former is a monoplane, and here again the influence of Etrich upon German aeroplane developments is strongly manifested, the shape of the bird's wing being retained.
